WEST POINT – It was a tale of two halves for the West Point Warriors this week. Russellville was in town for a big-time regional matchup that saw the Golden Tigers pull away after a tight first half to win big, 53-20.
The first quarter ended with the score knotted at seven but that changed when Warrior quarterback Rylan Jones connected with Kolton Sapp down the field for a 65-yard touchdown that put West Point up 14-7 in the second quarter. The Warriors added to their lead early in the second quarter with an 8-yard touchdown from running back Hunter Persall, making it 20-7.
The Golden Tigers quickly responded with a touchdown that cut the lead to 20-14 and followed that up with another score that gave them a 21-20 lead going into the locker room at halftime.
Persall’s touchdown was the last time West Point got on the scoreboard, and Russellville got off to a fast start in the third quarter. By the midway point of the third quarter, the Golden Tigers had stretched their lead to 35-20 and they continued to pull away as the game went on, putting the Warriors away, 53-20.
West Point, now 2-3, will be off this week and it’ll be a good opportunity for the Warriors to regroup and prepare for their road trip to Jasper in two weeks.
