VINEMONT – Westbrook Christian (Class 2A, Region 6) made its way to Vinemont (Class 3A, Region 5) Friday night for the start of region play and was sent home with a 15-13 loss to the Eagles thanks to a late field goal by Vinemont’s Daniel Flores-Carreno.
The Warriors received the opening kick at the 10-yard line and ran it out to the 25. Vinemont took possession of the ball after Westbrook failed to gain any ground. Both teams were unable to come up with any type of scoring during the first quarter.
In the second, Westbrook took the ball from the 35 to the 48-yard line, setting up the Warriors for a 40-plus-yard touchdown pass. The extra point wasn’t successful, and after a little back and forth, Vinemont’s Lucas Miller intercepted a Warriors’ pass. The Eagles’ offense carried it all the way to the 4-yard line, making a clear path for quarterback Jack Hill to find Cam Carter in the end zone for a touchdown. The PAT was blocked by the Warriors.
In the last quarter, Vinemont’s Tim Carter returned a kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown, but the 2-point conversion was no good. At the end of the last quarter, with less than 5 minutes on the clock, Westbrook found the end zone one more time to go ahead.
Vinemont received the ball, and Flores-Carreno nailed the 32-yard field goal to put the Eagles on top, 15-13. Eagles safety Wyatt Thompson picked off the Warriors on their final possession to end the game.
Vinemont will be back on the field next week when they travel to Midfield (Class 3A, Region 5).
