VINEMONT – The Falkville Blue Devils (Class 1A, Region 7) traveled across the county line to take on the Vinemont Eagles (Class 3A, Region 5) Friday night In what turned out to be a back-and-forth game. Falkville managed to hold on to win the game, 32-28.
Falkville got the ball to begin the game and managed to strike quickly on a 6-yard touchdown run. After the 2-point conversion they led the game 8-0 with 7:33 left in the first quarter. It only took Vinemont two plays to answer with a touchdown of its own, with Jack Hill throwing a 68-yard touchdown pass to Nate England. After a failed extra point attempt, the Eagles were down 8-6. On the ensuing possession the Eagles’ defense stepped up to force a three-and-out, giving the ball back to their offense. The Eagle offense didn’t waste the opportunity; Hill found Teague Whatley for a 52-yard touchdown pass, which put the Eagles up 12-8 with 4:02 remaining in the opening quarter.
Immediately following the first quarter there were technical difficulties with the score board that were not solved until the start of the third. The Blue Devil offense was driving the ball down the field, but the Eagle defense stepped up to force a field goal, which cut the Eagle lead to 12-11. After several stalled possessions, the teams headed to the locker room for halftime with the score still at 12-11.
On the first drive of the second half the Eagles fumbled, setting the Blue Devils up at first-and-goal from the 9. It only took the Devils’ offense three plays to take the lead with a 2-yard touchdown run; after the successful 2-point conversion the Blue Devils led 19-12 with 8:04 to go in the third quarter. The Blue Devils managed to extend their led to 26-12 when they scored on a 16-yard run with 5:29 to go in the third. The scoring was not over for the quarter; with 50 seconds left a 47-yard run stretched the Devils’ lead to 32-12.
The Eagles scored quickly in the fourth on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Hill to Cam Carter, cutting the Devils’ lead to 32-20 after the successful 2-point conversion. After the defense forced a punt the offense did what it needed to do, scoring on a 10-yard run by Dustin Moore, with 4:31 left in the game the Eagles once again cut into the deficit, as Falkville’s lead was now 32-28. The Eagle defense was fired up as they forced yet another three-and-out, but the comeback for the Eagles fell short as they couldn’t convert a fourth down.
