CULLMAN – Cullman County Animal Shelter volunteer Donna Ruttkay introduces us to The Cullman Tribune’s Pet of the Week:
Gus is a 5-year-old pit bull who was rescued by Cullman County Animal Control during an animal cruelty investigation. He arrived at the shelter emaciated, severely malnourished and otherwise neglected. Shelter staffers have nursed him back to health and have found that he does not fit the commonly accepted pit bull stereotype at all.
“Don't let the severely trimmed ears influence you,” said Ruttkay, who described Gus as a “kind-hearted soul” with a “forgiving and resilient way about him.”
Despite appearances, Gus is a laid-back, low-energy pet with a possible future as a companion, comfort or therapy dog. He enjoys playing with his purple tennis ball and splashing in the kiddie pool. Once starved, he has developed a hearty appetite, and is learning his leash etiquette.
Animal shelter staff and volunteers work with their dogs to make sure they are accustomed to being around people, walking on a leash and practicing good behavior. Several of the shelter’s dogs have even been “hired” to work as special needs service dogs.
Gus’s adoption fee is $90, which includes: DHLPP vaccine, Bordetella vaccines, rabies vaccine, wormer, general exam at the vet, neutering, microchip, free 45-day health insurance policy issued by 24PetWatch (with valid email only) and a free bag of food from Cullman Pet Depot (you must pay sales tax).
