CULLMAN – Local humanitarian, Sara Linkous, is in the final stretch of the National Obesity Foundation’s Humanitarian Award Competition. Linkous was nominated by her cousin, Lauren Heatherly, because of her work within the Cullman community, as well as abroad.

After hearing the news from the first article about Linkous, votes have flooded in, putting her well in the lead. This could not last long, however, as the humanitarian currently in second place sits at 1,612 to Linkous’ 1,641.

“The score is currently 1,641-1,612, with us being in the lead, but the score is constantly changing,” said Linkous. “After the first article ran, I was blown away by the amount of support by our community. I have always known that Cullman is very community oriented, but when it is you that is being supported, it seems almost like a dream. I am so grateful to have this support.”

After humanitarians are nominated, it is up to friends, family and the community to get the votes where the contestant needs. If Linkous is successful in this endeavor, she will be met with a specialist team to find the right treatment plan to get her back to health so that she can continue her work. Linkous has been a vital part of the congregation at Desperation Church, and also a source for helping others recover from substance abuse.

“If I win this award, it will give me the opportunity to do more community service projects and international mission work,” said Linkous. “My body cannot currently handle being in the heat for long periods of time. Winning this award and being able to lose the weight faster will help my overall health; I will also be able to exercise more often and for longer periods of time.”

With the competition ending on the 15th, Linkous asks that the community pull together one last time to help get her across the finish line.

“I thank you all so very much for your continued support. Seriously, I cannot do this without you,” she said.
