CULLMAN – Cullman County Commission members presented Wade Hancock with a certificate of achievement for his performance in the 2018 National Community Transit Roadeo, held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at their meeting on Tuesday at the Cullman County Courthouse. Hancock, who was representing the Cullman Area Rural Transportation System (CARTS) and Cullman County at the event, was recognized for his first-place finish in the van division and for receiving the 2018 Otis Reed, Jr. Driver of the Year Award.
The event, which took place June 9-10, is a competition in which drivers from all over the United State compete for the highest score on a course that tests the drivers’ skills, with a primary focus on safe operations and passenger sensitivity.
In new business, the commission approved a motion to ratify the City of Cullman's abatement for JELCO, in the amount of $88,000 for machinery and personal property. The abatement was to offset the costs of building an addition to JELCO's current facility.
A motion to consider a set of FEMA mitigation projects concerning the March 19 hailstorm was not approved. The commission did not consider the project, which would have acquired car shelters for some of the County vehicles, feasible for its needs.
The commission moved to surplus a non-functioning Centurion Security System for disposal.
A motion to purchase seven personal computers for CARTS to replace old machines was approved at the cost of $6,764.45.
Carey Thompson was appointed to the Board of Equalization to replace Mark Aderhold after his resignation.
Commission members approved the purchase of 928G Caterpillar loader from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs at the cost of $60,000.
The commission approved three proposed plats for re-subdivision, lots one, two, three, five and six in Hawk's Nest, located in District 2 off County Road 184, lots 17 and 18 in Hawk's Nest, in the same location, and lots 18, 19 and 20 in the Clearwater Cove subdivision located in District 2 on County Roads 2015 and 2017.
Commission members also approved two other plats for the Ege subdivision, in District 1 on Leonard Road and Swafford Road, and Hawk's Nest, in District 2 off County Road 184.
Bid no. 1265 was approved by the commission. The bid regarded an extension an agreement with B&B Petroleum to provide gas and diesel for County vehicles.
The commission approved bid no. 1285, which would aggregate the cost of rock or stone for County projects and ensure the purchase the nearest, cheapest material for a given project.
Commission members approved bid no. 1286, for fog and scrub seal.
The next Cullman County Commission meeting will be Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 10 a.m. in the commission meeting room at the Cullman County Courthouse. The public is invited to attend.
