HANCEVILLE – Citizens in Hanceville may soon see special banners around their city. The Hanceville City Council on Thursday night voted to participate in a banner program that honors veterans and fallen service members. The City authorized the use of its street poles for the banners, which themselves must be purchased privately.
Like the banners in similar programs in Arley, Addison and Good Hope, the ones in Hanceville will display photos of local veterans from the city, listing their rank and branch of service. Juanita Culler, who spearheaded the banner project in Arley, spoke to the council about the details of ordering similar banners for Hanceville during a work session before the Thursday’s meeting.
In other new business, the council approved Resolution 632, to submit a grant request for an Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). The $250,000 grant, if received, would be used for new sidewalks and crosswalks, and address drainage problems along Alabama Highway 91 between Church Street and the gas station. Mayor Kenneth Nail signed the submission forms after the meeting.
Council members approved payment of an invoice from Cullman Auto Body for repairs to one of the City's police vehicles. The vehicle was damaged during the storm that swept through Cullman on March 19.
The council also approved the purchase of a new pickup truck for the Hanceville Police Department. In turn, the police department agreed to allow Hanceville Park Director Ashley Dye to use one of its trucks for park work.
Nail, who will not be at the next meeting due to travel, expressed his appreciation for Councilwoman Sharon Porter since he will not be there for her final meeting. Porter announced her resignation in June. She will be moving to Athens due to her husband’s job.
“I appreciate (Porter) the last couple of years being on the council and serving the citizens and all that she's done,” said Nail. “I hate to see her go, but it is what it is.”
The next council meeting will be July 26 at 6:30 p.m. with a work session at 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
