BAILEYTON – The Baileyton Town Council met this week to continue discussion of ongoing AT&T contract negotiations and to award a bid for the construction of two storm shelters.

The council expressed hope that discussion and finalization of the coverage contract with AT&T representatives will be quickly resolved. The town first gained coverage in 2008, but the 10-year contract is set to expire on Dec. 31, 2018. The council expects another contract to extend coverage for another 10 years once negotiations are completed.

The bid to construct two storm shelters in the Baileyton community has been awarded to Survive-A-Storm Shelters of Thomasville, Georgia. The construction will cost $179,990; however, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will cover 80 percent of the expenses. Baileyton’s 20 percent contribution does not have to be fully made in taxpayer money. Land owned by the Town, as well as work by Town employees and Town equipment, is evaluated and assessed as part of its contribution.

The council voted to withdraw a current grant proposal from the Cullman County Community Development Commission (CCCDC) for assistance with the town park’s lighting. The council made the decision on the advice of Cullman County Economic Development Agency Director Cherrie Haney, who offered to assist with writing new grant proposals to both the CCCDC and other sources of potential grant assistance.

The council expressed its gratitude to Haney and thanked Rep. Randall Shedd, R-Fairview, as well as other members of the county legislative delegation, for their support of the Baileyton community in their proposals to the CCCDC.
