CULLMAN – Several local schools and athletes collected hardware at the AHSAA State Track and Field meets last week. The 1A-3A meet was hosted at Cullman High School and the 4A-7A meet in Gulf Shores.
In class 1A, Addison’s girls took fifth place and Meek’s girls finished 21st. Meek’s boys placed ninth with Addison’s boys came in 19th. On the 2A side, St. Bernard’s girls took home the silver, Cold Springs’ girls finished fifth, St. Bernard’s boys placed fifth and Cold Springs’ boys landed just behind them in sixth place. In class 3A, the Lady Eagles of Vinemont took 15th place and Hanceville’s boys finished 24th.

Several area athletes brought home gold medals, finishing first in the state in their respective events.
1A-3A Meet winners:
- Addison’s Emee Baldwin set a new 1A state record for pole vault Friday morning with a mark of 10-08.
- Addison's Abbie Chambless took silver in the high jump.
- St. Bernard’s Leahrose Mami had a big day as well, pulling off a clean sweep in her individual events, taking home gold in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs; she also helped the Lady Saints’ 4×800 meter relay team finish with a gold medal.
- Cold Springs’ Grace Chambers placed first in the 2A discus throw with a throw of 30.65m.
- St. Bernard’s Andrew Sweeney placed first in the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs as well as helped the Saints’ 4×800 meter relay team make first place.
- St. Bernard’s Elijah Price won gold in the high jump.
- Meek’s John Mark Abercrombie took first place in the javelin throw.
At the 4A-7A Meet in Gulf Shores, Good Hope’s boys placed 33rd overall in 4A and the Lady Raiders took 21st. West Point and Fairview’s girls finished 25th and 29th, respectively, and the boys’ squads placed 12th and 27th. Cullman’s boys managed to finish 18th on the weekend and the Lady Bearcats finished highest amongst local teams at the meet in ninth place.

4A-7A Meet winners:
- Multiple local athletes took home hardware, but West Point’s Hunter Appling took home a new state record as well. Appling placed first in the 100-meter hurdles with a new state-best time of 14.10, beating a 21-year-old record time of 14.13. Appling also snagged the gold in the 300-meter hurdles.
- Cullman’s Caroline Hollingsworth also put on a gold medal performance over the weekend, finishing first in the high jump with a mark of 5-04.00.
- Two more Bearcats, Will Kress and Anna Franklin, claimed silver medals in the 110-meter hurdles and pole vault events, respectively.
