PREP BASEBALL: Good Hope falls to Dora in extra innings, 3-2
DORA – Good Hope looked to finish its regular season strong when the Raiders took on Dora on the road Tuesday. They fell just short at the end; the Bulldogs took the game in extra innings, 3-2.
Dora hit the run column first in the bottom of the second. Tanner Earnest led off the inning with a single to left field; one out later, Good Hope starter Tyler Legg walked Keilan Martin, but Legg picked him off at first. Legg allowed back-to-back singles and the Bulldogs had the early 1-0 lead. They added another run in the bottom of the fourth on a suicide squeeze play by Will Goodwin.
Good Hope didn’t get any offense going through the first five innings, with only one runner reaching base, Jager Burns on a walk. The Raiders finally got something going in the sixth inning. Burns broke up the no-hitter with a lead-off double to right field, and back-to-back strikeouts later, Preston Bagwell kept the inning alive when he drew a walk. Burns moved up to third on a passed ball, then Legg lined an RBI double to left field to cut the deficit to just one at 2-1. Hancock drew an intentional walk to load the bases for Josiah Cofer, who hit a ground ball to third and it was botched by Goodwin, allowing Bagwell to score and tie the game at two.
Neither team scored in the seventh, so the game went into extra innings. Back-to-back singles with one out for Dora got the Bulldogs started and Earnest reached on a fielder's choice but got caught in a rundown between first and second, which allowed the Bulldogs to win the game during the play.
Legg went the distance in the game, allowing nine hits and three runs, walking one and striking out six. He also had a hit and an RBI. Austin Eakes and Burns had the other hits for the Raiders. Bagwell and Burns each scored a run. The Raiders fall to 8-12 overall and will take on Dora at home in a doubleheader on Thursday.
PREP BASEBALL: Myers, Cullman romp past Brewer, 14-1
SOMERVILLE – Cullman continues to roll after clinching a playoff berth a few days ago. A six-run first inning, plus another dominating pitching performance by Michael Myers, helped the Bearcats roll past Brewer, 14-1.
Cooper Beck and Weston Norton drew back-to-back walks to lead off the game for Cullman. Brady Patterson came in as the courtesy runner for Norton and Will Morrison lined an RBI single to right field to put the Bearcats on the scoreboard; Patterson advanced to third and Morrison advanced to second on the throw-in. Peyton Colvard hit another RBI single to right field, then Grayson Taylor hit a three-run homer and after reaching on a fielder's choice later in the inning, Carson Freeman scored on an error to make it a 6-0 advantage for Cullman.
Colvard and Taylor drew back-to-back two-out walks in the second inning. Brennen Norton then lined a two-run double to center field and Hayden Henderson hit a two-out, two-run single to right field; the Bearcats were rolling early, up 10-0 after just two innings. Brennen Norton added an RBI double and Freeman had an RBI single in the fourth; Colvard and Patterson each added RBI singles in the fifth inning.
Myers was on cruise control from the start, allowing just two singles and one unearned run, walking none and striking out seven. Myers threw just 55 pitches; 44 of those 55 went for strikes, and out of the 18 batters he faced, he threw first-pitch strikes to 15 of them.
All of the Cullman starters but one, including Patterson on the bench, collected at least one hit. Brennen Norton finished with two hits, three RBIs and scored two runs. Taylor hit a three-run homer for his only hit of the game, finishing with three RBIs and two runs scored. Colvard went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Henderson collected a hit and two RBIs. Morrison had a hit, an RBI and a run scored, as did Patterson. Freeman chipped in with two hits and an RBI. Beck (one run scored) and Weston Norton each finished with a hit in the game.
Cullman is now 22-8 overall on the season and 12-1 in the last 13 games; the Bearcats will host Brewer in a doubleheader on Thursday.
