VINEMONT – A Vinemont teacher has been arrested for one count of engaging in a sex act with a student under the age of 19. Chasity McRae, 35, was taken into custody on Thursday, March 15. She was a counselor at Vinemont Elementary School. The student involved is an 18-year-old male who is a senior at Vinemont High School.

According to Cullman County Schools Superintendent Shane Barnette, "She (McRae) has resigned, thankfully, so we don't have to make a movement on it. She resigned on the day she was arrested."

Barnette said McRae had been employed by the school system for more than 10 years.

"Everybody needs to be aware, in any profession," said Barnette. "This started out through Snapchat and text messaging and gradually escalated to become more. And once we discovered that and we investigated the situation, that's when we had to take some action on it."

Barnette said McRae and the student didn't have any interaction at school that he was aware of.

The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office said, in a press release Monday morning, that after receiving information that McRae may have be involved in an inappropriate relationship with a student,  CCSO investigators corroborated the initial complaint and McRae was placed under arrest.

McRae was released on a $10,000 bond.
