HUNTSVILLE – Hey, teachers!  Want a chance to get away for a day, brush up on a little science and a little history, and not spend a bunch to do it?  This coming Friday through Monday, Jan. 13-15, the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville is offering free admission for all educators who present a current school ID during the museum’s Teacher Appreciation Weekend. Teachers who visit on Monday (Martin Luther King/Robert E. Lee Day in Alabama) could even qualify for professional development credit.

From the Space and Rocket Center:

“As our salute to educators for their hard work and dedication, please join us Jan. 13-15, 2018, for Teacher Appreciation Weekend at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.  Present your school identification throughout the weekend and receive free general admission for yourself and one guest to the museum.

“Explore our newest exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution, ‘Spark!Lab.’  This interactive space allows guests of all ages to become engineers as they work on design challenges, from cleaning up the ocean to creating flying machines.  The hands-on activities inspire all ages to use critical-thinking skills to solve clever challenges!

“Also visit our current featured exhibition, ‘Above and Beyond.’ This exhibit, set to Next Generation Science Standards, allows students to race at the speed of sound, soar to orbit for a spectacular 360-degree view of Earth and climb aboard a fascinating journey to Mars. From flying cars and supersonic planes to space elevators and mega-rockets, “Above and Beyond” takes you faster, farther and higher for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“Teachers can also sign up to attend a free workshop, ‘Environmental Control Life Support System (ECLSS): ISS Water Purification Challenge,’ on Monday, Jan. 15 from 11 a.m. to noon. This workshop provides a hands-on lesson plan for your classroom allowing you and your students to filter water like an astronaut. Teachers who attend the session will receive one hour of professional development credit.”

The U.S. Space and Rocket Center, located at One Tranquility Base, Huntsville, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week.  For more information, call 1-800-637-7223 or visit www.rocketcenter.com.
