WEST POINT – The West Point Warriors hosted the Fairview Aggies Friday night for a regular season matchup and there were some exciting finishes throughout the night. The junior varsity units got things started at 4:30 and the results were split. The JV Lady Warriors took their game 35-27 thanks to a strong night defensively and over in the other gym the JV Aggies took their game 60-47. The Aggies scored 24 points in the second quarter and the Warriors couldn't catch back up.
The Lady Aggies and Warriors tipped off next and the Fairview offense put together a great performance from the 3-point line on its way to a 51-42 road win. Guards Payton Golden and McKinna Yearwood each hit three shots from beyond the arc; the Lady Aggies knocked down eight threes in total during the game. Golden and Yearwood finished with 11 and 13 points, respectively.
West Point's Miriam Oldacre kept the Lady Warriors in it during the second half with her game-high 14 points but it wasn't enough to keep pace with Fairview. Lady Warriors Guard Lexi Shadix also had a good night, finishing with six points, a team-high seven rebounds, a block and a steal.
The Lady Aggies' full court pressure made things difficult for West Point and led to eight steals, including three from Golden. Lady Aggies Forward Abbi Taylor was also effective on defense with a steal and a block to go with her game-high eight rebounds and 10 points.
The Lady Aggies will try to stay hot from 3-point range back home against Hayden on Jan. 9 and the Lady Warriors will look to regroup and get a win on Jan. 8 when they host Vinemont.
In the final game of the night, the Warriors and Aggies clashed in a fast-paced game that came down to the wire. Fairview fought its way to a 63-58 win thanks to an even better 3-point performance than the Lady Aggies had just put on. The Aggies hit 12 threes in the game, including five from guard Cameron Guthrie, a tie for the game high. Guthrie led the Aggies with 18 points. Fairview's Luke Yarbrough and Bryson Fletcher each knocked down three shots from deep as well. Yarbrough left the game in the second half with a leg injury and finished with 15 points, four rebounds and a steal, Fletcher scored 17 and pulled down four boards of his own.
Fairview wasn't the only team with someone hot at the 3-point line. West Point's Coby Sullins led the game with 21 points and tied Fairview's Guthrie with five buckets from 3-point range. Sullins scored the first 13 points of the game for Fairview and also led the game with three steals.
West Point entered the fourth quarter trailing by just three points and managed to tie the game on a steal and layup from Sullins with less than two minutes to play. After a quick bucket and some free throws from Fairview, West Point's Austin Dubberly cut the lead to 58-57 from the free-throw line with just less than a minute remaining. Dubberly finished with 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Fairview's Fletcher iced the game on a steal and two free throws to take a 61-57 lead with 26 seconds to play. The Aggies will be tough to beat if they can continue to shoot the ball this well and hope to build some momentum against Hayden Jan. 9. The Warriors came up just short in a hard-fought game but will be ready to get back in action against Vinemont Jan. 8.
