GARDEN CITY – The Garden City Town Council spent a large portion of its Monday night meeting discussing the work schedule for town hall. Some of the council members said they have received complaints about the town hall only being open four days a week. After discussing the positives and negatives of a five-day and four-day weekly schedule, the council voted to keep the four-day, 10-hour per day work schedule in place. The decision was not unanimous, however. Councilman Michael Black voted in favor of a five-day schedule.

After the vote, the council approved a motion to hire an office assistant for town hall. The position will be 20 hours per week at $9.50 per hour with a possible 50-cent raise after 90 days.

Next on the list were a couple of old business items:

Ordinance no. 2017-217 increases the issuance fee for a business license to $12 to match the rate that is set every five years by the Alabama Department of Revenue.
Resolution no. 2017-380 grants a one-time annual payment of $25 each to Garden City volunteer firefighters. Mayor Tim Eskew was excited to help out the volunteer fire department and said he thinks it should become an annual thing.

“I’d like to thank you all for doing this and I think it’s something that we need to be doing every year because these gentlemen put their lives on the line every day they go out on a fire call,” Eskew said. “They do it without pay and I commend them for doing that for the community.”

The council wrapped up by approving Ordinance no. 2017-218 which establishes a series of no parking zones in town. The new no parking zones will be the north and south sides of Fifth Street, east and west sides of Railroad Avenue and the east and west sides of Second Avenue Southwest.

The Garden City Town Council will meet next on Jan.15 at Garden City Town Hall. The work session will start at 5:30 p.m. followed immediately by the council meeting at 6. The public is welcome to attend.
