HANCEVILLE – Following two seasons as head football coach at his alma mater, Hanceville High School's Craig Flanigan is out. Hanceville Principal Jimmy Collins confirmed the decision Wednesday morning.

"Hanceville High School would like to thank Coach Craig Flanigan for his time spent as our head football coach," Collins said in a statement to The Tribune. "However, we have decided to go in a different direction with our football program. Coach Flanigan is an outstanding man; he and I have been friends since kindergarten, but we need to get our football program competitive again.  Our school and community have a strong tradition of winning. We want to see us get back to that tradition."

The Bulldogs went 1-9 this year, 0-6 in 3A, Region 6. In 2016, the Bulldogs had three victories.

"We feel like we have a lot of talent on the field, but unfortunately, going 1-9 and competing in only 2 of those 10 ballgames doesn’t reflect that," Collins said. "We plan to begin our search for a new head coach immediately and will make a decision by May."

Flanigan was hired at Hanceville on July 19, 2016, following longtime coach Danny Miller's retirement. Prior to returning to his alma mater, Flanigan was an assistant coach at Walker, Austin and Hayden High Schools.

He was quarterback and a member of the secondary when he played at Hanceville from 1988 until 1991. In the 1990 season, the final for Ray Talley, Flanigan helped the Bulldogs to eight straight wins and a runner-up berth in 3A, Area 12 to Vinemont. His senior season produced six victories with Keith Burns at the helm and another journey into the 3A postseason.
