VINEMONT – The Vinemont Eagles hosted the Broncos of Holly Pond on a cool and windy night for a pivotal Region 6 matchup in class 3A. It was senior night for the Eagles, but there was a lot of meaning for the Broncos in this game as well. Holly Pond clinched the fourth seed in Region 6 and a play-off spot to go along with it thanks to a dominant 40-9 victory over Vinemont.

The Broncos took control early thanks to their running game mixed in with some explosive pass plays. Sophomore quarterback Kyler Chaney had an efficient night throwing the ball completing five of seven passes for 70 yards, as well as running the ball 13 times for 55 yards and a touchdown. Junior tight end Tyler Boatright caught three passes for 32 yards and junior receiver Alex Corneligo hauled in two passes for 38 yards.

Chaney’s junior running back Jeremiah Holmes was also a big part of the offense, running for 100 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries; 90 of those yards came in the first half and contributed to the 230 yards of offense and 32-3 lead that the Broncos took into halftime.  His partner in the backfield, junior Brody Rowell, also had a big night, going for 47 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries.

Holly Pond ran the ball for 277 yards allowing the Broncos to control the clock and keep Vinemont’s offense on the sideline for most of the night.

The Broncos’ defense had a strong showing as well, allowing just 91 yards of offense and three points in the first half. By the end of the night, the Broncos had forced three turnovers including a diving interception by junior defensive back Isaac Ludwig off of a tipped pass.

The Eagles generated some success in the running game in the fourth quarter thanks to some hard running from senior Oistin Cornelius. Cornelius ran for 36 yards and a touchdown on seven carries late in the fourth.

The home loss drops the Vinemont Eagles to 2-7 this season and 1-5 in Region 6, eliminating any remaining play-off scenarios for them this year. They will try to finish the season strong on the road next week against Falkville.

The region win locks up a play-off spot for the Broncos and moves them to 6-3 on the year as they get ready for another road trip next week to Fairview. Holly Pond will try to build some momentum against the Aggies before going into the postseason.
