Abercrombie’s 5 TDs drive Meek’s 43-28 win over R.A. Hubbard

COURTLAND –  It was homecoming for the R.A. Hubbard Chiefs as they hosted the Tigers of Meek, but it was Meek who came away with the victory, 43-28

Meek didn’t take any time getting the offense clicking. On the first play from scrimmage, John Mark Abercrombie ran 65 yards for the touchdown, taking just 13 seconds of the clock. The Chiefs answered on their first possession when Riely Evans scampered 46 yards for the TD. The 2-point conversion was good, giving the Chiefs an 8-7 lead with the clock showing 10:20 remaining in the opening quarter.

Both offenses continued the fireworks when Abercrombie scored from 35 yards out to regain the lead for the Tigers, 13-8, with 4:08 still to go in the first. On the ensuing kickoff Hubbard’s Otis Robinson took it right up the middle for a 70-yard touchdown. The Chiefs had the game 14-13.

Finally, the defenses stepped up, forcing a series of three-and-outs, but Meek took a halftime lead,19-14, thanks to Abercrombie’s 1-yard touchdown run late in the second.

Coming out of the break, the Chiefs regained the lead, 20-19, on a 72-yard run by Evans. Four plays later the Tigers answered on a 5-yard run by Abercrombie, pushing the lead to 27-20 with 10:15 remaining in the third.

Late in the third, Abercrombie took it in from 21 yards on his fifth touchdown of the night, making it 35-20, Meek.

The Chiefs were not giving up easily, and midway through the fourth, Kenneth Perkins took it in from 2 yards out, cutting the deficit to 35-28 after the conversion. The Chiefs got the ball back late, but an interception for a touchdown by Meek’s Stewart Waldrep with 4:14 remaining in the game sealed the deal for the Tigers.

Final score: Meek 43, R.A. Hubbard 28
