WEST POINT – The Lady Warriors had an impressive Thursday afternoon, defeating Fairview and Hanceville in volleyball action.
West Point 25-14, 21-25, 25-13, 25-23 over Fairview
The West Point Lady Warriors got out to a quick 4-0 start, including an ace by Molly Pendley, to open the action against Fairview. The Lady Aggies fought back and took the lead before a McKenzie Carter kill knotted the game at 5-5. The action went back and forth until a lengthy 9-0 run forced a Fairview timeout. West Point took control of the game out of the timeout and continued to impose its will with aces, kills and blocks at the net to take the first set 25-14.
West Point jumped out to a 2-0 lead to start the second set and it looked as if it would be the same as the first, but the Lady Aggies had a little bit to say about that. On the strength of kills by Ally Hogeland, McKinna Yearwood and Daisy Manasco, Fairview took a 9-6 lead and forced a West Point timeout. Out of the timeout Fairview continued to build on the lead, stretching it five, before West Point closed the gap. The action went back and forth for the rest of the set, with the lady Warriors getting as close as three, but Fairview finished out the set for a 25-21 victory.
The third set belonged to the Lady Warriors, who opened a 7-3 lead and never looked back, cruising to the 25-13 victory.
The fourth and final set of the match was a wild affair. West Point led by as much as 10, but Fairview fought back and closed the gap to 24-23 on an ace by Yearwood at the end of the set. Unfortunately for Fairview, a return serve landed just out and West Point held on for the 25-23 victory, claiming the match three games to one.
Fairview 25-20, 25-12 over Hanceville
After playing West Point hard, Fairview turned right around and jumped into its match with Hanceville. The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Fairview before an Abbi Taylor kill put Fairview on the board. This started a Fairview rally that saw them open a six-point lead. Hanceville fought back but never get closer than three, as Fairview claimed the game 25-20.
The second game was dominated by Fairview, scoring point after point relying on kills from Taylor, who had five in the game, to cruise to a 25-12 win and claim the match 2-0.
West Point 25-9, 25-22 over Hanceville
After falling to Fairview, Hanceville the took the court against West Point. The Lady Warriors controlled the game from the opening serve from Selena Clark, who served 14 times to open the game and garnered nine aces. The 14-0 hole was too big for the Lady Bulldogs to crawl out of, and they fell 25-9 in the first set.
Hanceville came back in set number two, with the Lady Bulldogs playing like they had something to prove and showing West Point that they were not going away. The action was back and forth through the majority of the set until West Point took over late and scored three straight points to take the game 25-22 and the match 2-0.
