Charles H. Klein Rites Saturday – Prominent Businessman 40 Years

Charles  H.   Klein,  age  68,  prominent businessman here for over 40 years, died on January 23rd, following a  several weeks illness.

A graduate of Mississippi A and M College, Mr. Klein had been owner- manager of the Cullman Creamery, later renamed Klein’s Dairy Products, since 1923.

He was a past president of the Cullman Rotary Club. He was presented the first Cullman Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year Award, in 1956 and had long been active at Saint John’s United Church of Christ.

Mr. Klein’s wife was the late Louise Nuss Klein.

Surviving are five sons, Henry, Charles and August Klein, of Cullman, the Reverend Ernest Klein, of Centralia, Indiana and the Reverend Robert  Klein, of Newport, Indiana; four daughters, Miss Marie Klein, of San Francisco, California, Mrs. Earl Reynolds, of Weatherford, Oklahoma, Mrs. Quentin Nigg, of Hanceville and Mrs. Amelia Tucker, of Louisville, Kentucky; twenty-five grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Ellen Klein Smith.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, at Saint John’s United Church of Christ, with Reverend Calvin Schmid officiating. Moss Service directed interment in the City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Melvin Holcomb, Virgil Jetton, Karl Ruehl, Gilbert Flippo, Alvin Preiss and Alvin Kannady.

Humphries Rites Monday

Funeral services were held on January 27, at Ebenezer, for William E. Humphries, age 77, of Route Three, Vinemont, who died at Cullman Hospital on January 25.

Reverend J.M. Phillips conducted the services and Moss Service directed interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Ruby Brown and Mrs. Gladys Hendrix; one son, Raymond Humphries; one brother, Allen Humphries; three sisters,  Mrs. Dosie Driver, Mrs. Algia  Oakley  and Mrs. Eddie Reid; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

City Election Called For Extending Limits

An election has been called for extending the city limits of Cullman, to include the section north of the present limits known as Cherry Hill Subdivision.

All qualified electors, who have resided within the boundaries of the territory, proposed for annexing, may vote in the election to be held on February 24, at the Calvin Kilpatrick residence.

A copy of the plat, showing the area and the resolution of the City Council calling the election have been filed in the office of Probate Judge Graf Hart, who has called the election.

James E. Burgess Badly Burned

James E. Burgess remains in Cullman Hospital, suffering with burns over 55 percent of his body. He is improving.

Mr. Burgess, age 38, of the Bethel community, was injured on Saturday afternoon, while he was working at Forrest Ingram’s garage. Something ignited kerosene, which exploded.

Other Fires

A switch box, at the E.L. Jones residence, on Marie Street, was damaged by fire on Wednesday morning.

Other fires, none of which did any damage, were a trash fire at Star Café, on Tuesday and two grass fires on Hickory Street and one on Ninth Street.

Mrs. Sandlin Dies

Mrs. Pearl Lenora Sandlin, age 59, of Route One, Bremen, died on January 23, at her residence and funeral services were held at Sandlin’s Chapel on January 25, with the Reverend Weaver officiating and Moss Service directing interment.

Survivors include her husband, Blan Sandlin; two sons, Leland and Bennie Sandlin and two daughters, Mrs. Marilyn Reed and Mrs. Ethel McDowell.
