CULLMAN – The Cullman County Commission on Tuesday awarded Triple J Construction the bid for construction of the new senior center and sheriff’s office substation in the community of Crane Hill. The bid was for $320,225.

Earlier this year, the Cullman County Community Development Commission awarded a $50,000 grant for the building and the commission appropriated $25,000 for the project.  The sheriff’s office will foot the bill for the rest of the cost. The substation/senior center will be located across from the Crane Hill Volunteer Fire Department.

In new business, the commission voted against closing a portion of County Road 1615 in the community of Berlin, and will keep the road open for use.  A public hearing on the closure was held at the commission’s May 23 meeting, after the request for the closure was made by AGCOR Steel. Many residents attended the hearing to voice their opposition to the proposal, presenting the commission with petition signed by more than 300 people.

The commission then ratified the payment of $8,615 to Kroll Ontrack for recovery of hard drive data for the revenue department, and approved the renewal of a one-year hardware and software maintenance contract with HiComp for $5,488.55.

The commission heard one request from Drew Green, Cullman County chair of the Alabama 200 Bicentennial celebration. Green asked for $5,000 to promote tourism in connection with the bicentennial. The request was approved unanimously.

The commission considered entering a two-year agreement with the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce to promote Cullman County for the purpose of creating quality job growth, building the tax base and increasing sales tax revenue; however, Commissioner Kerry Watson and the commission decided to table the vote to further look into the agreement.

The commission rejected bid proposals to renovate the Commission on Aging building due to bids being well over budget.

A 2010 Dodge Charger and 2010 Chevy Tahoe were surplussed following a request from Sheriff Matt Gentry. The state probation and parole agency will use the vehicles in the Cullman area.

In a split bid award for its advertising, the commission awarded a bid for legal advertisements to The Cullman Times and display advertisements to The Cullman Tribune.

A bid for retreading tires was awarded to McGriff Tires.

The commission will hold its next work session on Tuesday, June 27 at 8:30 a.m., followed by a meeting at 10 a.m.
