CULLMAN – In the wake of Rock the South, many local residents have expressed concern about the condition of Heritage Park’s soccer and baseball fields, and are anxious to see them properly restored. The Tribune spoke with Cullman Parks and Recreation Director Nathan Anderson and Rock the South’s Nathan Baugh to get more information on work at the park.
Both offered assurances that the baseball fields will be ready for the short-field games to be played there this weekend. After that, those fields will be closed for three weeks. They will be regraded and completely re-sodded with new turf. Baugh said that the fields would reopen around July 1.
He also said that restoration of the soccer fields would be a longer process of approximately five to six weeks. Since CP&R soccer activities don’t begin until August, the fields will not be resodded; but will instead be reseeded and tended by sports field turf specialists until they are back in shape.
According to Baugh, three turf companies were contacted, and two will be making the repairs, in order to move the process along as quickly as possible. He could not name the companies, as contract details are still being worked out. Anderson did point out that the companies CP&R approached have experience in turf installation and repair on a variety of athletic fields in both collegiate and professional sports.
The exact dollar amount of the repairs has not been disclosed, but Rock the South will, as they have every year, be responsible for the costs.
