COLONY – The Colony Town Council met this week, and the big topics of discussion were the town’s Memorial Day celebration and slate of upcoming summer kids’ activities, including a free meal program.
This Saturday, May 27 at 8 a.m., the town will host a breakfast for all area veterans at the Colony Educational Complex. Former State Rep., Rev. James Fields, himself a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, will be the speaker.
Mayor Donnis Leeth and Councilman Curtis Johnson presented information about the town’s summer programs. Colony will participate in a summer feeding program sponsored by the Department of Education and Department of Agriculture. Free breakfasts and lunches will be served at the Educational Complex Mondays through Fridays from June 1 through July 31.
In order to qualify for the federally-funded program, the Town must also provide activities and educational programs. Johnson said that Colony’s pool should be ready to open by June 1, and will be open until the conclusion of the feeding program. Work continues on the Community Center and basketball court, with plans to open them at the same time as the pool.
A summer reading and activity program is also in the works for the Educational Complex. As part of that program, staff from the McWane Center in Birmingham will be at the center at 2:30 p.m. on Wed., June 14. On Wed., June 28, magician Skip Cain will put on an interactive show.
The council also discussed the seat vacated by Myra Twitty at the last meeting, and hopes to hold a special meeting to appoint a replacement in the next two weeks.
The Colony Town Council meets at 6 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at Colony Town Hall. The public is invited to attend.
