Weather doesn’t dampen Senior Day spirit

Visitors bundled up, but braved the cold

CULLMAN – Cullman City Parks and Recreation (CP&R) and the Cullman Commission on Aging were not happy about Friday’s weather forecast, but crowds defied the cold, windy rain to pack the Festhalle for Senior Day at the Strawberry Festival.  Weather did get the final word, though, shutting down afternoon and evening activities.  Saturday should go on as planned.

On hand for the morning’s festivities, CP&R Director Nathan Anderson said, “We are happy with the Senior Day attendance.  Considering the elements, we’re at a full house right now.”

The Festhalle was filled with visitors.  Some danced as a live band played 50s and 60s classics, while others shopped for produce from farmers lined up down the west side of the facility.  Most were bundled up and staying warm.  Portable heaters were the hot commodity (pun intended!) of the day; visitors gave up their seats to gather close around the devices for some tight-knit fellowship.

“We’re, like with any event, facing some obstacles,” said Anderson.  “You do everything you can to be prepared for whatever comes your way.  Right now we’re dealing with a chance of rain, and it’s cold and windy; but we are still looking at making this event happen.”

Initially, Anderson planned to move activities into the Festhalle, and continue with a scaled-back evening schedule; but the weather eventually prompted a cancelation.  Saturday, though, is still on.

Anderson said, “As far as tomorrow, you couldn’t ask for a more beautiful day.  We’re really excited about the event tomorrow.  Last year we had over 10,000 people come, and we sold out of strawberries by noon.  We’re doing our best to get more strawberries in this year, to stretch out the sales longer.  We have great entertainment lined up.

“Everything is wide open for tomorrow.  Come out, support our local farmers, buy the strawberries and enjoy the festivities.  We have something for everyone.  Support our local arts and crafts vendors, and enjoy the entertainment.”
