High school sports: busy weekend ahead

CULLMAN – Spring sports in the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) are now in the home stretch to the finish line.

Postseason play is underway for baseball, with the playoff format beginning this weekend for soccer and track and field.

Softball is heading to the end of the regular schedule with one local event bringing plenty of people into the city for two days.

Cullman's annual Pre-State Blowout is Friday and Saturday, with 26 teams ready to invade Heritage Park and the Field of Miracles. This will be their opportunity to tune up before they head into area tournament play next week.

Friday's schedule is pool play with eight brackets of at least three teams in a round-robin format.

Tournament steps aboard Saturday with single-elimination play. Seven teams are in the small schools category, with 19 to fight it out in the larger division.

Plenty of impressive resumes come to the tournament with Sparkman no. 1 and Spain Park second in the final 7A poll, James Clemens eighth in 7A, Gardendale third in 6A, Chelsea seventh in 6A, Springville second in 5A, Mortimer Jordan fourth in 5A, Hayden eighth and Ardmore ninth in 5A, Central-Florence fourth in 4A, American Christian third in 3A.

Danville is 25-10-1, J.B. Pennington 24-9, West Morgan 20-15-1, Cullman 21-16-1, East Lawrence 26-13-1. These teams missed out being rated in the Top 10 in their respective classifications.

Tournament play starts at 9:30 a.m. Saturday with the small schools final set for 3:30 p.m. and the large schools to play for the title at 5 p.m. Both title games will be at Heritage Park.

BASEBALL: Cullman at Walker in Class 6A, 5 & 7 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday (if needed)

GIRLS' SOCCER: Cullman at Southside-Gadsden Friday 6 p.m.

BOYS' SOCCER: Cullman at Fort Payne Saturday 7 p.m.
