Holly Pond Broncos varsity basketball team with coaches and commission members
CULLMAN – The Cullman County Commission met amid a packed-out conference room this week, as they welcomed basketball players from Holly Pond and Fairview High Schools. The varsity Broncos, as well as the varsity and junior varsity Lady Aggies, were presented with official proclamations recognizing their winning 2016-2017 seasons.
Chairman Kenneth Walker welcomed the boys, praising their hard work.
“I appreciate y’all coming,” he said to the sea of green and white. “I know it took a lot of hard work, dedication. A lot of your friends out swimming and having a good time and y’all was bustin it in the gym. I know Coach Morris, and Coach Jones also have got great feelings for the team. Much less having young men of their own on the basketball team. I know it takes a lot of hard work to get where y’all went, and I just wanted to recognize y’all for the successful year that y’all had. I’m glad that y’all came.”
Turning his attention to the girls, Walker said, “Like I told the guys, I know y’all were very dedicated to have the season y’all had this year. For your practice and your hard work and your dedication. that’s why you’re here today, because you’re champions of Cullman County and we appreciate your hard work.”
County Clerk Charlotte Slatton read all three proclamations to the assembled crowd.
Also at the meeting, West Point Mayor Kenneth Kilgo spoke on behalf of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, a historical preservation society. “What we’ve done here locally, is we give presentations to schools about true southern history. We’ve adopted Cullman Caring for Kids as our charity.
“We meet the last Tuesday night of every month at 7 p.m. at the VFW. Our meetings are open to everybody. We are non-racial, non-political. We are strictly a historical preservation society. We’d love to have you join us.”
Nonprofit group Karma in Cullman requested and was given permission for a children’s fishing event from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on June 24 at Sportsman Lake Park.
Speaking on behalf of Stony Lonesome OHV Park, Cullman County Parks and Recreation Director Doug Davenport requested permission for an event that will take place at the park after normal closing time on Friday night, June 9, when there will be a memorial for the two spectators who were killed at the park on April 22, as well as for the families and the two people who were injured. Davenport says there will be a candlelight vigil and then riders who would like to can ride their ATVs back to the hill where the accident happened to pray and pay their respects. The following day, on June 10, will be a free day, with any donations gathered given to the victims’ families.
“I ask that everybody continue to pray for the victims, those who lost loved ones, those still in the hospital in Birmingham and for the park staff,” said a solemn Davenport.
