CULLMAN – The Cullman County Commission this morning proclaimed Saturday, April 1 Colors of Cancer Day in Cullman County. The Colors of Cancer Day event, sponsored by the Cullman County Bosom Buddies Foundation, will take place this Saturday at the Cullman County Fairgrounds and Sportsman Lake Park.

Taking comments from the public, the commission heard from a representative from the Better Business Bureau, who shared that the BBB Shred Day will take place in the King Edward Plaza shopping center this Saturday, April 1 from 8:30 a.m.-noon. This is a day when residents can bring confidential documents, old electronics and prescription medications for secure disposal at no cost. The BBB will also be hosting a food drive for Cullman Caring for Kids.

Next, the commission approved an abatement of $19 million to Topre America Corp. for equipment.

Due to a clerical error, the commission moved the public hearing date for the vacating of County Road 1615 to May 23.

The county administrator was approved to participate in an actuarial study for post-employment benefits. The next two orders of business regarded the Regional Housing Authority. The appointment of Ginger Hicks to the RHA will reflect a 5-year term ending in April 2022, and the reappointment of Linda Cabri will have a term expiration on April 14, 2021.

The commission approved participating in the annual "Free Dump" program in May. This program will allow residents, on any day of their choosing, to bring their trash to the dump at no cost. Some restrictions apply: liquids cannot be accepted so they must be mixed with sand or cat litter before disposal, and there is a one-time limit for residents to bring their garbage.

The next three points on the agenda regarded finances. The commission voted to approve paying $60,000 toward the Volunteer Fire Department Training Facility, paying $39,490.63 to UAB for medical services performed on an inmate, and increasing the funds for the Veteran's Day celebration to $4,000. After that, Chairman Kenneth Walker signed an agreement with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management to work together on collecting and disposing of scrap tires found on roadways.

The last order of business before adjourning was the consideration of a plot of land on County Road 222 for a subdivision, which was approved.

The next commission meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 11, at 10 a.m. in the commission meeting room at the Cullman County Courthouse.
