GARDEN CITY – The first thing on the agenda for the Garden City Town Council this week was to recognize a special pair of visitors. Catherine Bethell and Sandy Parker from the First Source for Women Pregnancy Center in Hanceville are continuing their trek across the county to educate municipalities about the organization. Bethell discussed the center's basic purpose: to help women who are pregnant care for their child in whatever way they need. She also talked about the new mobile unit, which is set to debut in the fall, and lastly brought out copies of their referral pamphlets. The pamphlets detail any service, specialist, organization, or charity that would be of help to women in different circumstances, whether it be escaping abuse, receiving healthcare or learning how to be a parent.
After Bethell finished her presentation, the council approved both the minutes from the last meeting and the invoices. The council's first order of business was to approve the purchase of new fitness-based playground equipment. While on the subject of the playground, a suggestion was made to have the motion for the purchase also approve the repair of the swings. The original motion passed with the addition. Next, the council voted to let the topic of the school property lease die.
Next up was a resolution stating that the Garden City Volunteer Fire Department received a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and a proposal that the council purchase the necessary equipment the fire department needs. The resolution passed unanimously. Councilman Scott Arnold presented the fire department a handmade wooden flag in honor of everything they do to protect the members of their community.
Mayor Tim Eskew had several reports and updates to give:
- The Eighth Street crossing will be closing soon for removal.
- Everything went well at the meeting with the Alabama Department of Transportation.
- Cleanup for various properties is ongoing.
- The Town received four new backpack blowers, chainsaws and a pole saw for forestry.
- Outside speakers will soon be hooked up.
Lastly, after asking for various reports and hearing that the fire department needs more foam, Eskew announced that there would be a post-meeting demonstration of the department's new tanker truck.
The Garden City Town Council meets on the third Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at Garden City Town Hall. The public is welcome to attend.
