CULLMAN – Crowds filled the Cullman Civic Center on Friday evening for the Cullman Rotary Club’s 44th annual fundraising auction.  Hundreds of items were available through silent and open auction including big-screen TVs, furniture, jewelry and watches, firearms, art, lawn care equipment, tools, gift certificates, fine wines and liquors, Cullman City Parks and Recreation family memberships and Smoky Mountain vacation packages.  Raffles and games gave away additional prizes and cash.  Donors to the event included businesses and individuals from all over Cullman County, as well as Walker and Winston Counties and even as far away as Birmingham.

According to Cullman Rotary President Dale Greer, “We go out to businesses and individuals and ask for things, and that’s why you’ll see about anything that anybody in town does.  It’s for men, for women, for children, for pets!  It’s pretty special.”

All the proceeds from the evening’s sales and contests go to support Cullman Rotary’s charitable activities.

Club Secretary Michael Fuller explained, “Every dime that we get from this auction supports our charitable relief efforts in the community.  Every dime that we get to donate to the community through whatever we do comes from this auction.  It is our sole fundraising source.  We don’t use it for the support of the club or anything of that nature; it is 100 percent completely contributed back to the community.”

The Cullman Rotary Club supports numerous local causes, including a Habitat for Humanity house for clients of the Margaret Jean Jones Center, the replanting of trees after the 2011 tornadoes, building of a dock at Sportsman Lake, Wallace State scholarships, Good Samaritan Clinic, the Pilot House, The Link of Cullman County, United Way of Cullman County, Cullman Caring for Kids, Childhaven, local schools among many others.

Final numbers were not immediately available, but the Cullman Rotary auction was expected to bring in around $50,000 for the club’s projects.

Fuller said of his organization, “Our club is 100 percent committed to ‘service above self,’ which means that we do our best to try and benefit the community in whatever we do.  We have a group of folks, 66 strong, who meet on a weekly basis in an effort to figure out how we can help Cullman be a better community.”
