CULLMAN – On Friday and Saturday evenings, the West Point Band Boosters presented the 34th Annual Ford IPRA Stars and Stripes Rodeo. Friday night mostly featured special activities for children and families, such as face painting and boiled peanuts, with the main event on Saturday night. The West Point FAA String Band set the mood for an old-fashioned rodeo.
The Cullman County Agricultural Trade Center was nearly full to capacity on Saturday night as more than 130 individuals competed in everything rodeo: bareback riding, bull riding, steer wrestling, tie down roping, breakaway roping, team roping and of course, barrel racing.
Alongside cowboys, cowgirls and bulls, Saturday night featured a rodeo pageant, judged by a cast including Miss Rodeo USA. It was not a usual beauty competition by any stretch of the imagination. To win a rodeo beauty pageant, some horse riding skills are a prerequisite.
West Point Band Director, Ty Parker, estimates that the event generated between $10,000-$15,000 for the West Point marching band. Parker hopes that this year’s event was able to revitalize the annual rodeo and return it to its former glory.
