BREMEN – It was smooth sailing for the Cold Springs Lady Eagles and the Winston County Lady Yellow Jackets in the first round of the girls 2A Area 13 Tournament Monday night.

Cold Springs 70, Falkville 31

As the host team, the Cold Springs Lady Eagles had the crowd on their side and were favored over the Falkville Lady Blue Devils, a team they had beaten twice before in the regular season by a combined 98 points. Standout Jill-of-all-trades Emme Willoughby got the game started off on the right foot for the Lady Eagles when she hit a short jumper for the first points of the game. Cold Springs then tried to get ahead from behind the 3-point line as they so often do but the shots were not falling and they were just 2-of-9 from downtown in the first. With less than two minutes to go in the quarter, the Lady Eagles found themselves down by four, but Willoughby rose to the occasion and went on a personal 6-0 run that put the Lady Eagles ahead 13-11 after one.

As cold as they were from 3-point land in the first, Cold Springs was equally as hot in the second. The Lady Eagles got a pair of threes from Camryn Crider, one from Sadie Terry and one form Willoughby to go 4-of-8 from long range. Aubrey Negron, Crider and Willoughby also had points from inside the arc to take a 29-17 lead at the end of the half.

Cold Springs took over the quarter and the game in the third, scoring an impressive 21 points while smothering Falkville with a blanket-style defense and press that held the Lady Blue Devils to just eight points in the quarter. Along with Crider and Willoughby, Neely Ellison got in on the points parade that helped the Lady Eagles to a 25-point lead heading to the fourth.

Prisca McAnnally and Negron led the charge for Cold Springs in the fourth as they cruised to a 70-31 victory over Falkville to set up a championship match-up with Winston County.

Winston County 49, St. Bernard 38

It was tough going for the St. Bernard Lady Saints Monday night as they took on the Winston County Lady Yellow Jackets to see who would advance to the 2A Area 13 championship game, and unfortunately for Lady Saints fans, it was Winston County.

St. Bernard started the game with the first points, a bucket by Anna Meyers, and follow up with a three by Emma Tafazoli, but the Lady Yellow Jackets soon caught up. With the Lady Saints up by two with less than a minute left in the first quarter, Abby West drilled a three for the Lady Yellow Jackets to give them a 13-12 advantage after one.

Winston Co kept the pressure dialed up in the second while extending their lead with a 7-2 run that ended the half with the Lady Yellowjackets on top 22-17.

Winston Co. came out of the locker room determined to put away St. Bernard, going on a 6-0 run to start the quarter. St. Bernard countered with Meyers, Tafazoli and McKenna Kline, but it was not enough as the Lady Yellow Jackets pushed their lead to 15 after three.

Kline got the Lady Saints on the board in the fourth with a short jumper, but Winston Co. quickly answered with six points of their own. The Lady Saints scored the last eight points of the game, but came up short, and their season came to a close at the hands of Winston Co. by a final score of 49-38.
