FAIRVIEW – It is now area tournament time for Cullman County teams. Fairview's girls are hosting the Class 5A, Area 12 tournament for the first time. They, along with county foe, West Point, rolled to easy wins over Curry and Hayden, respectively, and will face off against each other Thursday for the area championship and for the right to host a sub-regional game either next Monday or Tuesday.
Fairview 73, Curry 20 (Girls)
Fairview did not waste any time, getting off to a quick start offensively, as Jada Golden scored eight of the team's first 12 points to take a 12-0 lead before Curry's Katie Downs put the first points on the board with 3:41 remaining in the first quarter. Golden was one of six Lady Aggies to score in the opening quarter, and they also forced six Lady Yellow Jacket turnovers, as they took a 20-2 lead after one.
Fairview, again, put up 20 in the second quarter and they allowed only a basket by Haley Holcomb to take a commanding 40-4 lead at the half. Curry, finally, scored in double-digits as they scored 10 points in the third quarter, but once again, Fairview put up 20 points, to take an astounding 60-14 lead after three. They ended up taking the game in spectacular fashion, winning 73-20.
All but one Fairview player scored in the game. Abby Taylor was one of three Lady Aggies to score in double figures as she finished with 16 points, and also added 10 rebounds. Jada Golden and Abby Schnittker each finished with 14 points. Jordan Moore and Daylia Dean each had eight, and Taylor Yeager had seven.
Curry was led by Holcomb with six points.
West Point 76, Hayden 42 (Girls)
West Point leaned on the offense of eighth-grader Lexi Shadix as she scored 13 first-quarter points, and they suffered a huge loss in that quarter, as Miriam Oldacre hurt her right foot and did not return to the game. The Lady Warriors played very well on both sides, holding the Lady Wildcats to just six points, and took a 20-6 lead after one. They hit six 3-pointers in the second quarter, half of them by Micah Oldacre, two by Bailee Yearwood and one by Lillie Burdette, and that helped West Point take a 43-18 lead at the half.
They added seven more in the second half for a grand total of 14 in the game, and they were never challenged as they clinched the other spot in the championship game against Fairview, which will be played Thursday at 6 p.m. Forcing 19 Hayden turnovers, the Lady Warrior defense was on point tonight.
Shadix had 17 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks for West Point. Olivia Ball had 13 points, nine rebounds and two steals. Brooke Brownfield and Micah Oldacre each finished with 12 points, as all of their points came from behind the arc.
Gracie Benton led Hayden with 12 points.
