COUNTY TOURNAMENT: Good Hope holds on to defeat Cold Springs 80-67, advances to semifinals

HANCEVILLE, Ala. – (2) Good Hope squared off against (7) Cold Springs in Tuesday’s final game of the night and it was a nail-biter between the Raiders and Eagles. Cold Springs trailed 41-30 at halftime and continued to battle back in the second half, chipping away at the lead throughout the third and fourth quarters. The Eagles had the lead down to 6 at one point in the fourth quarter but the Raiders were able to pull away late in the final period and secure an 80-67 win.

Tyler Cone drove to the basket, scored through a foul and tacked on the free throw to give the Raiders a 3-0 start. A basket from Jacob Haynes and a pair of scores from Tucker Malin put Good Hope in front 9-0 until a basket from Ethan Day and a three-pointer from Ayden Black cut the lead to 11-5 later in the period. Owen Armstrong drained a three from the corner to make it a 14-5 game, but Black responded with a pair of baskets on the other end to trim the lead to 5. Cone and Haynes each scored off turnovers to extend the lead to 18-9 but Breydon Hallmon laid one in just before the buzzer to make it an 18-11 game going into the second quarter.

Armstrong hit a pair of free throws and Malin got a jumper to fall to give Good Hope a 22-13 lead early in the second quarter. Day scored on the other end to make it a 7-point game, but Kyle McSwain buried a deep three to keep the Raiders ahead 25-15. Midway through the period, Bailey Gann knocked down a three and Tycen Kilgo laid one in to bring the lead down to 29-21 and Black drilled another three to make it a 5-point game. That’s when Haynes scored five straight to put Good Hope in front 34-24. Pace and Cone also knocked down a couple threes, but Black answered with two more three-pointers on his end of the floor to hold the lead to 39-30. Malin drove to the basket for one more score before the end of the half and the Raiders went into the locker room with a 41-30 lead at the break.

Baskets by Cone and Haynes kept Good Hope ahead 45-32 early in the third quarter but a 7-3 run from the Eagles made it a 48-39 game. The Raiders responded with a 6-0 run of their own to move back out in front 54-39 but Cold Springs wouldn’t go away. A pair of Breydon Hallmon buckets cut the lead to 56-43 and Day scored inside to make it an 11-point game. Hallmon’s next basket brough the lead down to 9 and Day hit four free throws in the final minute to make it a 58-51 game. However, Malin laid one in just before the buzzer to give Good Hope a 60-51 advantage going into the fourth quarter.

Tucker Screws and Gann exchanged free throws early in the fourth to make it 61-52 and Gann laid one in to trim the lead to 7 with just over five minutes to play. Malin answered with a big three on the other end to keep the Raiders ahead 64-54. Hallmon scored seven straight for Cold Springs to make it a 69-63 game with around three minutes remaining but the Eagles weren’t able to get any closer than that as Good Hope put things away at the free throw line to secure an 80-67 win and a spot in the varsity boys’ semifinals.

Malin led the way for the Raiders with 36 points in the win and Haynes posted 17. Day led Cold Springs with 21 points in the loss, followed by Black with 18 and Hallmon with 16.

Good Hope will take on Fairview in the varsity boys’ semifinals on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
