COUNTY TOURNAMENT: West Point advances to semifinals with 71-46 win over Cold Springs

HANCEVILLE, Ala. – In the lone girls’ matchup of the night, (3) West Point faced (6) Cold Springs with a spot in the semifinals on the line and the Lady Warriors jumped out to an early lead over the Lady Eagles. West Point went into the locker room with a 41-18 at halftime and fended off Cold Springs in the second half to secure a 71-46 and advance to Thursday’s varsity girls’ semifinals.

Caitlee Simmons buried a trey on West Point’s opening possession to give them the early lead, and a pair of baskets down low by Laklin Shadix gave the Lady Warriors a 7-2 lead. Ella Dickerson knocked down a pair of free throws to cut it to 7-4. Both teams traded threes and rebounds and putbacks to keep it at a three-point game at 12-9. That’s when West Point started to create some distance between them and Cold Springs. Patton Fell knocked down a three from the right corner, Shadix hit a pair from the line, and Harbison grabbed the offensive rebound and put it back in to stretch their lead to 19-9 late in the first quarter. Jaelyn Faulkner scored the final five points of the quarter for the Lady Warriors, as they extended their lead to 24-10 at the start of the second quarter.

Rebounds and putbacks by Camryn Faulkner and Harbison gave West Point a 28-10 lead. Camryn Faulkner laid it in, and Jaelyn Faulkner added a trey from the left wing to make it a 34-12 game. Kenady Graves banked in a floater, and Avery Gerstman knocked down a three to cut it to 36-17. Simmons drained a trey, and Fell added a pair of free throws to stretch the Lady Warrior lead to 41-18 going into the locker room.

Dickerson put in a quick basket on Cold Springs’ opening possession of the third quarter, and Bruer’s rebound and putback cut it to 41-22. Camryn Faulkner laid it in, then Fell scored five straight points to extend West Point’s lead to 48-24. Shadix knocked down a free throw, and Fell added two more from the line to make it a 51-27 game. Hollyn Bruer buried back-to-back treys to cut it to 51-33 with a little over three minutes to go in the third. Camryn Faulkner scored five straight points, including a three-point play, and Harbison added a rebound and putback to push the Lady Warrior lead to 58-33. West Point would take a 58-35 lead into the final period.

Camryn Faulkner laid it in, then a rebound and putback by Shadix put the Lady Warriors ahead, 62-37. Layups by Camryn and Jaelyn Faulkner made it 68-39, and Fell added a late three to make it 71-41. West Point would go on to knock off Cold Springs 71-46 to move on to the semifinals.

Fell led the Lady Warriors with 18 points in the win, followed by Camryn Faulkner with 17 and Jaelyn Faulkner with 15. Bruer led the way for Cold Springs with 11 points in the loss. Dickerson added 10 and Graves finished with eight.

West Point will be back on the court Thursday at 7:30 p.m. to face (2) Vinemont in the varsity girls’ semifinals.
