HANCEVILLE, Ala. – This year’s Cullman County Basketball Tournament officially tipped off at Wallace State’s Tom Drake Coliseum Saturday and day one is packed with JV matchups. Our first game of the day was a JV Boys battle between (4) Fairview and (5) Holly Pond. After a tight first half, the Aggies outscored the Broncos 9-4 in the third quarter to create some separation and continued pulling away in the fourth to secure a 42-28 win and spot in the JV Boys semifinals.

Quick baskets by Connor Scott and Meighton McParlin tied the game at 2 early in the opening period. Jonah Shockley hit a pair of free throws and then laid one in on the following possession to put the Broncos in front 6-5 later in the period but Konnor Dunkin and Ty Babb responded with three-pointers on the other end to give the Aggies an 11-6 lead. McParlin scored in the final seconds of the first to trim the lead to 11-8 going into the second.

Cash Huddleston drilled a three to tie the game at 11 at the start of the second quarter but Babb answered with a three of his own to keep Fairview in front 14-11. Another Shockley basket made it a 1-point game but a three from Ayden Batz on the other end extended the Aggie lead to 17-13. Scott laid one in to make it a 19-13 game but after Shockley split a pair of free throws, Ty Dunn drained a three to cut the lead to 19-17. However, Colt Dean knocked down a three, drew a foul and added the free throw in the final seconds of the half to give Fairview a 23-17 advantage at the break.

The Aggies slowed things down in the third quarter and added to their lead. Baskets by Babb, Dunkin and Dean stretched the lead to 29-17 and after Walker Marks laid one in to stop the run, Batz responded with a three on the other end to put Fairview ahead 32-19. Marks got one more shot to fall before the end of the period and the Broncos went into the final frame trailing the Aggies 32-21.

Eli StDenny and McParlin exchanged baskets early in the fourth to make it a 34-23 game and Scott converted an and-one play at the line to make it 37-23. Dean knocked down a jumper to add to Fairview’s lead and put things out of reach for Holly Pond. The Aggies went on to defeat the Broncos 42-28 and advance to the JV Boys semifinals.

Dean led the Aggies with 10 points in the win, followed by Babb with nine and Scott with seven. Shockley led Holly Pond with seven points in the loss and McParlin added six.

Fairview will face the top-seeded West Point Warriors Monday at 3 p.m.
