PREP BASKETBALL: Good Hope Raiders, Lady Raiders collect area wins over Danville

GOOD HOPE, Ala. — After picking up a pair of area wins at East Lawrence on Thursday, the Good Hope Raiders returned home on Friday to take on Danville in two more area matchups. In the girls’ game, Good Hope outscore Danville 26-7 in the second quarter as they rolled to a 71-32 win over the Lady Hawks and in the boys’ game, a 25-8 second quarter by the Raiders helped them break the game wide open and collect an 88-42 win over Danville.

Good Hope 71 – Danville 32 (Varsity Girls)

Jolee McHan scored inside for Good Hope’s first points of the game, and Sophie Konrad scored the next four points to give them an early 6-2 lead. Ava McSwain added a basket of her own to make it 8-2, but Danville scored the next five points to cut it to 8-7. Konrad put in another floater, Lexi Marshall drained a three from the right corner, and McHan drilled a short jumper to push the Lady Raider lead to 15-7. Marshall scored the final five points of the quarter, including a three-point play, as they extended their lead to 20-10 going into the second.

That’s when Good Hope would break the game wide open. McHan knocked down a basket in the paint, and Marshall laid it in to make it 24-10. Ella Gossett scored four straight points, Lucie Adams put in a basket after grabbing the offensive rebound, McSwain buried a trey, and Gossett added a layup of her own to stretch their lead to 35-12. A rebound and putback by Lexi Collins, plus a tough basket in the paint by Konrad, made it 39-14. Just like the first quarter, Marshall finished the second strong, as she scored the final seven points, and the Lady Raiders would take a commanding 46-17 lead into the locker room.

Layups by Marshall and Gossett, plus a trey by Konrad, gave Good Hope a 53-21 lead. Marshall added another basket down, and Gossett drained a pair of threes, as the Lady Raiders pushed their lead to 61-25 going into the fourth quarter. Konrad put in a driving layup, and Gabriella Richter scored down low to make it 65-26. McHan hit a pair of baskets and added a pair from the line to help seal the 71-32 region win for the Lady Raiders.

Marshall led the way for Good Hope (18-5, 6-0) with 21 points. Gossett added 14 points. Konrad collected 13 points and McHan posted 12 points.

Good Hope 88 – Danville 42 (Varsity Boys)

A rebound and putback by Tyler Cone, plus a trey by Tucker Malin, and a basket in the paint by Tucker Screws, gave Good Hope an early 7-2 lead. A pair of Danville treys cut it to 10-8, but Owen Armstrong scored down low, and Jacob Haynes dropped in a floater to make it 14-8. Later in the first, Kye McSwain drilled a trey, and a pair of rebounds and putbacks by Tucker Keef and Cone made it 21-12. Tyler Byrd hit a pair from the line to give the Raiders a 23-14 lead going into the second.

Just like the girls’ game, Good Hope took over the game in the second quarter. Haynes put in a pair of baskets in the paint, then Malin collected a steal and laid it in to make it 29-16. Haynes scored again in the paint, then Cone buried a trey from the right wing to stretch their lead to 34-16. Malin knocked down another trey, Screws scored down low, and Dalton Patrick put one in from long range to make it 44-16. Haynes and Gavin Pace each added a late basket to give Good Hope a commanding 48-22 lead at the half.

Malin and Screws each put in a basket down low, and Pace scored five straight points, as Good Hope’s lead swelled to 57-27. Haynes put in another floater, Screws scored off an offensive rebound, and Cone dropped in a floater of his own to make it 64-32. Malin drilled a short jumper, Screws put in another basket after grabbing another offensive rebound, and McSwain put in a floater to give the Raiders a 70-36 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Malin and Armstrong each knocked down a trey to make it 76-36. Pace laid it in, and Screws scored a trio of baskets down low to push their lead to 84-36. Isaiah Turner put in a basket in the paint, and Screws added yet another basket down low to put the finishing touches on an 88-42 region win for the Raiders.

Screws finished with 18 points for Good Hope (17-6, 5-1). Haynes wasn’t too far behind with 17 points. Malin collected 15 points. Cone added 10 points, and Pace posted nine points.

Good Hope will now turn its attention to next week’s Cullman County Basketball Tournament.
