HOLLY POND, Ala. — The Holly Pond Town Council on Monday, Jan. 6, voted to raise two town government wages, viewed a proposed ordinance for mayor and council salaries and received a report on road repair spending in 2024.

The council raised the hourly wages of the town clerk and library assistant by substantial amounts.  The clerk’s wages, $16.50 per hour for several years, were raised to $18.50 per hour, with Mayor Carla Hart presenting information showing that the amount remains at the low end of average wages for town clerks in Alabama. The library assistant position moved from $10 per hour to $15 per hour after Hart remarked that the previous amount was well below current fast food wages in the area.

The council viewed but took no action on a proposed ordinance to govern the salaries of its members and the mayor. No salary amounts were presented, though Hart noted that the current amounts have been in place for several years.  The ordinance, under the law, must be passed by Feb. 26, 2025, six months before the next municipal election, so the council will need to propose salary amounts and vote on the ordinance at its February meeting.

Hart and Town Clerk Connie Moore presented a summary of expenditures from the Town’s Rebuild Alabama Act fund on local road projects in fiscal year 2024.  The Town spent $28,300 during the year on repairs to New Hope Road/County Road 1669 in front of the three Holly Pond schools, with $15,000 coming from Rebuild Alabama funds and $13,300 coming from the Town’s General Fund. The project is complete.

The council also passed an ordinance agreeing to use County-provided electronic vote counting devices for the upcoming election, and welcomed new businesses to town including Auto Zone coming to the old Dollar General, Insane McCain Fireworks next to Jack’s, Early Bird Chiropractic on Brooklyn Road near Governors Park and a new storage building dealer on U.S. Highway 278 near Stewart’s Carquest Auto Parts.

The Holly Pond Town Council meets at 6 p.m. on the first Monday of each month at the Guy Hunt Library. The public is invited to attend.
