MONTGOMERY, Ala. – To ensure the safety of travelers and construction and maintenance workers, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) will suspend temporary lane closures on Alabama interstates from 6 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 23, to 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1.

“Make sure safety is your top priority this season by ensuring everyone in your vehicle is buckled up,” said Allison Green, Drive Safe Alabama coordinator. “In 2023, nearly 55 percent of people who died in crashes on Alabama roads were not wearing a seat belt. A seat belt is your best defense in a crash.”

Between Dec. 21 and Jan. 1, AAA expects more than 119 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home, an increase of about 3 million compared to the same period in 2023. ALDOT encourages travelers on Alabama roadways to plan ahead, allow extra time to reach their destination and drive alert and free of distractions.

ALDOT reminds motorists to drive safely and offers the following tips and resources:

Plan ahead with ALGO Traffic. Motorists can find traffic and road condition information, including live traffic and camera feeds, at ALGOTraffic.com or on the ALGO Traffic app. Use these resources responsibly – never text or use a mobile device while driving.

Avoid distracted driving. Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of crashes. Put your phone down and keep your focus on the road. Alabama law prohibits holding a cell phone while driving.

Never drive impaired. Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is illegal and dangerous. Arrange for a designated driver or use a rideshare service if you plan to drink.
