GOOD HOPE, Ala. – After collecting an 88-54 win over Cold Springs on Monday, the Good Hope Raiders were back on their home court Tuesday night to take on the Redskins of Oneonta. Good Hope went into the halftime break with an 11-point lead but had to withstand a big push from the Redskins in the second half to secure a 61-53 win.
Baskets by Tucker Malin and Tyler Cone kept the score knotted at 4 midway through the first quarter but a pair of three-pointers on the other end allowed Oneonta to pull ahead 10-4. Gavin Pace knocked down a three to trim the lead to 10-7 and he took a steal the other way for an easy basket to make it a 1-point game with just over a minute to play in the opening period. Malin laid one in to tie things up at 11 with 30 seconds on the clock but the Redskins were able to move back in front 12-11 by the start of the second quarter.
Oneonta pulled ahead 15-11 early in the second but Malin scored inside, and Jacob Haynes split a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 15-14. The Raiders began to heat up after that, taking a 17-15 lead on a three-pointer from Cone. After Malin laid another one in, Cone buried back to back threes to give the Raiders a 25-17 lead with just under three minutes remaining in the half. Malin followed with a three of his own to make it 28-17 and Haynes added another basket in the final minute of the second to put Good Hope ahead 30-19 at halftime.
Malin drove to the rim and scored to keep the Raiders in front 32-27 early in the third but a 5-0 run by the Redskins tied the game at 32. Cone laid one in to give Good Hope a 2-point lead and Haynes converted an and-one play at the line to extend the lead to 37-32. Oneonta continued to battle back but Kyle McSwain knocked down a pair of three pointers to keep Good Hope in front 43-39 with a minute to play in the third. Owen Armstrong drained another three just before the buzzer to give the Raiders a 46-39 lead going into the fourth quarter.
A basket from Malin and a pair of Cone free throws made it 50-39 early in the fourth. Haynes scored the next four points for Good Hope to maintain a 10-point lead with around four minutes on the clock. After Tucker Screws split a pair of free throws, Cone scored inside to make it a 57-51 game and Malin and McSwain each hit a pair of free throws to wrap up a 61-53 win for the Raiders.
Malin led the way for Good Hope with 17 points in the win, followed by Cone with 16. Haynes finished with 11 and McSwain added eight.
Good Hope will remain home Thursday to host East Lawrence.
