Suspect arrested in fatal hit-and-run in Cullman

CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman Police Department on Tuesday, Dec. 3, announced it made an arrest in the deadly hit-and-run incident that took place Sunday, Dec. 1, leaving one dead. The crash occurred along Alabama Highway 69 near the Cullman Shooting Sports complex.

Michael Garrett Massie, 35, of New Market, Alabama, is facing preliminary charges of felony leaving the scene of an accident. The victim was identified Monday as Mark Alan Johns, 59, of Cullman.

A statement from the City of Cullman on Tuesday read: “On December 3, 2024, at approximately 3:32 PM, the Cullman Police Department quickly responded to a report of a white Nissan Altima linked to a fatal crash on December 1, 2024, that claimed the life of Mr. Mark Alan Johns. The vehicle was located at Apel Steel on US-Hwy 31. Michael Garrett Massie, 35, of New Market, Alabama, was identified and arrested for felony leaving the scene of the crash on AL-69 near AL-157. The investigation is ongoing, and further charges may be filed.”
