CULLMAN, Ala. — Sen. Garlan Gudger, R-Cullman, a seasoned legislator representing District 4, has taken on one of the most influential roles in the Alabama Senate. On Tuesday, Dec. 3, the Senate Republican Caucus elected Gudger senate president pro tempore, a position he describes as both an honor and a tremendous responsibility.
The leadership transition follows news that current Alabama Senate President Pro Tempore Greg Reed, R-Jasper, is stepping down to take a new position in Gov. Kay Ivey’s administration, effective Jan 1. Senate Majority Leader Steve Livingston, R-Scottsboro, was also up for consideration.
Gudger’s political journey began in 2004 when, at age 27, he won a seat on the Cullman City Council, becoming the youngest alderman in the city’s history. Reflecting on his early days in public service, he credits community leaders for mentoring him on effective governance.
“They taught me to be fair and to take care of all the people you represent,” Gudger said. “I learned a tremendous amount at the local level before deciding to run for the Alabama State Senate in 2018.”
Gudger’s first term in the Senate saw him rise to the chairmanship of the Fiscal Responsibility and Economic Development (FRED) Committee, a role he continues to hold. Over his tenure, he has championed legislation to protect small businesses, support education and provide tax credits for single parents. Notable accomplishments, he said, include his efforts to keep churches and businesses open during federal COVID-19 lockdowns.
“I’ve always been proud to fight for the things that matter most to my constituents and our state,” Gudger said.
Now Gudger will step into a top leadership role in the Alabama Senate. The position involves working closely with the governor, lieutenant governor and speaker of the house to shape the Senate’s annual vision. Gudger will also collaborate with budget chairs, he said, to ensure tax dollars are spent wisely and efficiently.
“This role represents the entire body of 35 senators,” Gudger explained. “I will work to ensure the people of Alabama are heard and come first.”
Gudger said his decision to run for the role came after prayerful consideration.
“I wanted to make the biggest impact on the state of Alabama that I could,” he said. “Since deciding to run, events each day have only confirmed why I made this choice.”
Reflecting on being elected by his Senate peers, Gudger expressed both gratitude and resolve.
“Sometimes God places you near a stage, adds a spotlight and a microphone and just wants you to walk out there in faith and give Him the glory,” Gudger said. “I believe that time is now here for me. I am ready to work hard with my colleagues to give a voice to the people of Alabama.”
