Otto William Evers died on November 23, 2024. He was born on August 5, 1929, in Cullman, Alabama to Magadalena Blette Evers and Otto Theodor August Evers. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 68 years, He is survived by his daughter Kathryn Evers (David Hartwig) of Parker, Colorado, grandson Will Hartwig (Jennifer Schmitt), of Washington, DC, granddaughter Katie Hartwig and Great grandson Leo Ashner of Denver, CO.
He attended school at Pleasant Hill, later at the City School and Cullman High school.
He joined the Air Force in 1950 and was stationed at San Antonio, Texas. Later he was transferred to Biloxi, Mississippi and then to Mather Field, California. He came home on leave in November, 1951 to be married to Mildred Frank when he received orders to report back to California for overseas duty. He was stationed in Tokyo, Japan for 18 months during the Korean Conflict. After returning to the United States he was stationed in Altus, Oklahoma and later sent to Greenville, South Carolina
After returning to Cullman they moved to the family farm which is now the Cullman Golf Course. During this time he made the decision to return to school. He attended Cullman College, St. Bernard College and University of Alabama Birmingham to earn his degree in education. He began his teaching career at West Point High School. After teaching several years he returned to school to earn his Masters Degree and later returned to school again to be able to teach drivers education. During his career in teaching he taught, at West Point, Vinemont High School, Good Hope High School, Fairview High School and Wallace State Community College night classes. He retired in 1988, from Fairview High School. After retirement he worked with the Soil Conservation Service.
He began working with Hospice of Cullman County as a volunteer and was in the first class to become a volunteer in Cullman. He worked as a Hospice volunteer for three years. He then began volunteering with the American Red Cross and later served on the Board of Directors. He served this organization as a volunteer for 12 years.
During his years of education, working and volunteering he continued to farm. He and his wife farmed on the Frank Farm at East Point and continued to live on the farm and planting a garden each year in addition to maintaining a well manicured yard with many types of plants in the flower garden.
Mr. Evers was a life long member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where he served with his wife and the late Dot Graf as youth counselors. He served as Sunday School Superintendent for a number of years and later served on the St. Paul’s Lutheran School
He was a member of the Cullman County Historical Society, a charter member of the Cullman German Club and the Friends of Frankweiler.
Mr. Evers was an avid reader, especially books of the Second World War. He enjoyed the travels to Europe, especially Germany and going to the towns his ancestors came from.
He will long be remembered for his years of teaching by the children he felt he helped to mold into productive citizens. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His family was his pride and joy.
