VINEMONT, Ala. – The Town of South Vinemont is hosting a free senior citizen Christmas fellowship event on Monday, Dec. 16, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Vinemont Community Center. Local seniors are welcome to attend and enjoy lunch and activities.
Town Clerk Kayecea Sasser said former Councilwoman Charlotte Cosper brought the idea for senior events to the mayor and council back in late 2022.
“The council and mayor agreed to start it on the third Monday of each month starting January 2023,” Sasser said. “Every month since then, we have steadily increased having our seniors each month. We average around 50-60 seniors each month.”
At last year’s December event, she said, they hosted a cookie bake-off, but this year they are excited to announce the pie/cake competition.
“The winner of the competition gets a $25 Walmart gift card,” Sasser said. “We also have seniors bring desserts each month for the events. We have received donations from local businesses that help support and provide games, prizes and the meals for the seniors. We have had an amazing outpouring of support from the community.”
The local Girl Scout troop does Christmas cards for the seniors as well, and a local daycare comes to sing Christmas carols and will be making and bringing ornaments.
“We are looking for additional judges if you like pie/cake and have availability on your schedule,” Sasser said. “We post information on our Facebook page or you can contact town hall directly at 256-737-5411. Bonnie Goodwin, Nina Justice and Ross Campbell are council members and can help with setting up and cleaning up the event.”
The senior events take place at the Vinemont Community Center, located at 88 Ridgeway St.
