PREP BASKETBALL: Broncos, Lady Broncos collect wins over Cleveland

HOLLY POND, Ala. — The Holly Pond Broncos hosted the Cleveland Panthers on Monday night and both teams ended up sweeping the Panthers. The Lady Broncos rolled past Cleveland 54-23 in the girls’ game and the boys’ game, a big fourth quarter from the Broncos helped them get past the Panthers 63-57.

Holly Pond 54 – Cleveland 23 (Varsity Girls)

The first quarter was very low scoring. A rebound and putback by Millie McBee got Holly Pond on the scoreboard first, then later on in the opening period, a layup by Maggie Nail, and a short jumper by Alana Phillips gave the Lady Broncos a 6-3 lead. A steal and a layup by Ava Thomas made it 8-5, and Holly Pond would take an 8-7 lead into the second quarter.

Holly Pond got off to a great start in the quarter, as steals and layups by Thomas and Nail gave them a 12-7 lead. A layup by McBee pushed their lead to 14-7, but a three by Cleveland cut it to 14-10. A pair of rebounds and putbacks by Thomas and Blakely Baggett made it 19-10, then Nail scored through a foul and made the free throw to increase their lead to 22-12 late in the first half. Thomas added a late basket to make it a 24-14 lead at the half.

The Lady Broncos widened their lead even more in the third quarter, as a free throw by Thomas, and four quick points by Madison Butts gave them a 29-16 lead early in the quarter. A driving layup by McBee made it 31-16, and Butts turned a pair of steals into layups as the lead swelled to 35-16. Nail banked in a shot, and back-to-back steals and layups by McBee made it a 41-22 game going into the final quarter.

McBee scored Holly Pond’s first eight points of the quarter, as that gave them a 49-22 lead. Maggie Nail and Sadie Nail each added a basket in the final period, as the Lady Broncos ended up rolling past Cleveland 54-23.

McBee finished with 18 points for Holly Pond (2-2). Maggie Nail added 12 points. Thomas ended up with nine points, and Butts collected eight points.

Holly Pond 63 – Cleveland 57 (Varsity Boys)

Ty Dunn drilled a three from the top of the key, and Carson Ryan added a basket in the paint to give Holly Pond an early 5-2 lead. Cleveland went on a 7-2 run to take a 9-7 lead, but a three by Ryan and a basket down low by Cade Allbright gave the Broncos the lead right back at 12-9 late in the first quarter. A driving layup by Fox Westall made it 14-11, but a three by the Panthers tied the game up at 14 after one.

A rebound and putback by Allbright, a driving layup by Boston Gibbs, and a free throw by Ryan gave Holly Pond a 19-14 lead. Cleveland tied it up at 19, but a pair of baskets by Asher Thrift made it 23-19. The Panthers, though, went on a 13-2 run to end the first half, as they took a 32-25 lead into the locker room.

Baskets by Thrift and Allbright cut it to 33-29 early in the third period, but Cleveland quickly pushed their lead to 39-29. The Broncos, though, would respond in a big way, as Allbright scored through a foul and ended up hitting the free throw to make it a 39-32 with a little over five minutes to go in the quarter. Ryan scored five straight points, and another rebound and putback by Allbright tied the game up at 39. The third quarter concluded with the Panthers holding a slim 43-41 lead.

Holly Pond got off to a strong start to the fourth quarter, as a floater by Gibbs tied the game up at 43. Later that quarter, Dunn drilled a pair of free throws, and Ryan, Allbright, and Westall each hit a basket in the paint to give the Broncos a 51-46 lead with 4:38 remaining in the game. Westall split a pair of technical free throws to keep the lead at four at 52-48. The Panthers cut it to 52-50, but a big basket by Allbright gave Holly Pond a 54-50 lead. Free throws by Allbright, Ryan, and Westall made it a 59-51 game. Two more free throws each by Ryan and Westall helped seal the 63-57 win for Holly Pond (2-2).

Ryan led the way for the Broncos with 19 points. Allbright wasn’t too far behind with 18 points. Westall added nine points and Dunn collected seven points.

Holly Pond will travel to Cold Springs on Tuesday.
