BAILEYTON, Ala. – Mayor Windell Calloway called the Baileyton Town Council’s monthly meeting to order on Monday, Nov. 4, with Councilman Greg Griffin opening with the invocation.
After a busy night of discussing the Town’s budget, Calloway shared that Councilman Roy Shedd offered his letter of resignation following the October council meeting. Shedd, who was not present at November’s meeting, served as mayor pro tempore. Dewayne Sumner and Greg Griffin were proposed as nominees to fill that role, with Sumner being appointed.
Following the appointment of Sumner as mayor pro tempore, Calloway opened the floor for nominations to fill Councilman Shedd’s place. Jack McGee and Donna Kent were nominated for the position. Calloway suggested that if no other nominees were to be brought forward the council should vote between the two. In a surprising turn of events, Councilman Wendell Peterson stated, “To make this vote easier, I will go ahead and offer in my resignation, too.”
The council accepted Peterson’s resignation and voted to appoint McGee and Kent to fill the open positions.
Peterson shared with the council, “I appreciate the privilege to have worked with y’all,” but he declined to comment further on his sudden resignation.
In other news, the Town of Baileyton is still searching for a town clerk. Interested parties may submit resumes or learn more about the position by contacting Mayor Calloway at windellcall@gmail.com or 256-385-1422. The deadline for applications is Monday, Nov. 18.
The next meeting of the Baileyton Town Council will be Monday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m. at Baileyton Town Hall, located at 95 Fire Station Road. The public is welcome to attend.
