Sherry “Joann” McCain Prichard was born April 27, 1935 in Fairview, Alabama. On October 28, 2024, Jesus came to visit her and she went with him to her heavenly home.
Joann grew up on the family farm with her parents Owen and Carrie Scruggs McCain and her sister Jan. This is where she learned to love cooking and picking cotton. She attended Fairview High School and graduated in 1953. She then attended and graduated Howard College (Samford University) in 1956 with a BS degree in Home Economics.
After graduation Joann began her teaching career at Moore Haven High School in Moore Haven, Florida teaching Vocational Homemaking. That lasted two years before a handsome Airforce Captain (Ray) courted her and convinced her to move back to Alabama.
Ray and Joann were married on June 21, 1958 and started their family in Birmingham. Joann changed her teaching focus to K-5 Kindergarten where she taught at Lakeside Baptist Church and Briarwood Christian School. Her teaching career spanned 50 years touching the lives of many young children.
Joann was an active member of Lakeside Baptist Church from 1967 to 2024. She loved the Lord and dedicated herself to helping others when she could. There was always a meal ready for family gatherings especially on birthdays and after church on Sundays.
She is survived by her three children and their spouses Michael (Tracey), Julie (Rusty) and Danny (Kathy). She had five grandchildren Ashley, Bradley (Jill), Zack (Christine), Carley (Andrew) and Sumner (Tyler). She also had three great-grandchildren Mason, Logan and Reid.
“I leave behind this earthly home to enter my heavenly home and hope each of you can do the same when God calls you home. Do a good deed for someone today in the name of the Lord.”
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been set up in her name at Lakeside Baptist Church, 2865 Old Rocky Ridge Road, Birmingham, AL 35243.
