CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman was back home at Bearcat Arena Tuesday night for a varsity match against Homewood. The Bearcats got off to a 2-0 start and after the Patriots took the third set, Cullman bounced back to win the third set and take the match 3-1.
The Bearcats jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the opening set and stretched it to 7-3 as the match went on. Cullman led 12-5 at one point but Homewood was able to rally and cut it to 13-11 midway through the set. The Bearcats stayed in front 16-14 before extending their lead to 21-15 and eventually pulling away to take the first set 25-18.
The second set was even tighter than the first. Cullman got off to another fast start, but the Patriots were able to tie things up at 10 later in the set. Homewood moved ahead 14-13 and led by as many as four at one point but the Bearcats didn’t back down. A 6-2 scoring run cut tied the score at 20 and Cullman rode that momentum through the rest of the set to earn a 25-23 win in the second set.
The third set was another hard-fought battle. The Patriots took a 6-3 lead early on, but the Bearcats rallied to tie things up at 10. The score remained knotted at 14 midway through the set but Homewood pull ahead to take a 20-16 lead as the set went on. The Patriots finished strong to take the set 25-20 and make it a 2-1 match.
Cullman jumped out to a 3-1 lead early in the fourth set, but Homewood quickly tied things up at 5 before pulling ahead to take a 10-6 lead. However, the Bearcats rallied to tie the score at 13 midway through the set and eventually built a 19-13 lead. The Patriots made a late push but couldn’t overcome the scoring run from Cullman and the Bearcats secured the match with a 25-18 win in the fourth set.
Cullman will travel to James Clemens Thursday.
