COUNTY VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT: West Point, Good Hope advance to county finals

HOLLY POND, Ala. – This year’s county volleyball tournament resumed at Holly Pond High School Tuesday night with a pair of varsity and JV semifinal matches. In the varsity bracket, Good Hope knocked off top-seeded Vinemont 3-1 to advance to the finals and West Point swept Fairview 3-0 to secure its spot in Thursday night’s county championship match. In the JV division, Good Hope downed Holly Pond and West Point defeated Vinemont to advance to the JV Championship Match.

West Point 3 – Fairview 0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-20)

West Point got out to a quick 6-2 lead over Fairview in the first set. The lead grew wider for the Lady Warriors, as it was 13-3 at one point. The Lady Aggies went on a couple of mini runs of their own to cut to 14-8, and later on, to 16-12. West Point quickly pushed their lead to 22-14 and would go on to collect a 25-18 win in the first set.

Fairview couldn’t have asked for a better start to the second set, as they scored the first five points to take the early lead. They increased their lead to 11-3, but the Lady Warriors went on a huge rally to get back in the game, as their deficit swiveled to just one at 15-14. Fairview quickly pushed their lead to 18-14, but West Point wasn’t done yet, as they scored the next four points to tie things up at 18. It went back-and-forth for a little bit between both teams, before the Lady Warriors scored the next two points to help seal the 25-23 win in the second set.

Fairview got out to a 5-2 lead in the third set, but West Point came back to tie it up at five. The Lady Warriors would go on another big run to take a 13-7 lead. The Lady Aggies cut it to 13-11, but West Point quickly widened their lead to 18-13. The Lady Warriors held a 21-14 lead late in the set. However, another run by Fairview helped make it a 24-20 game. West Point was able to get the final point of the set, as they ended up knocking off the Lady Aggies, 25-20, to advance to the championship game.

Good Hope 3 – Vinemont 1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-12, 25-20)

Good Hope got out to a fast start against Vinemont, jumping out to an early 7-2 lead. The Lady Raiders’ lead swelled to 12-5, but the Lady Eagles went on a rally to make it a 17-13 game. Good Hope, though, countered with an answer of their own, as they quickly pushed their lead to 24-14. However, Vinemont made things a little interesting in the end, as they cut it to 24-19. The Lady Raiders collected the final point of the set and ended up defeating the Lady Eagles, 25-19.

That momentum carried over into the second set, as Good Hope scored the first six points to take the early lead. However, Vinemont went on a huge rally to get back in the game, as they cut it to 8-7. The Lady Raiders held a 10-7 lead, but the Lady Eagles were just getting started, as they scored the next six points to take a 13-10 lead. They pushed their lead to 15-11. After Good Hope cut it to 16-15, Vinemont scored the next seven points to give them a 23-15 lead. Despite the Lady Raiders making it a 24-21 game, the Lady Eagles were able to hold on and get the 25-21 win in the second set.

Good Hope held an 8-3 lead in the third set. Vinemont cut it to 11-6 later in the set, but Good Hope’s 9-0 run made it 20-6. The Lady Raiders kept the double-digit lead the rest of the set and ended up getting a 25-12 win to take a 2-1 series lead.

Good Hope held a 4-1 lead in the fourth set. However, another rally by Vinemont late in the set tied things up at nine. There were four ties in this tightly close contest, as it went back-and-forth between both teams for a while. The Lady Eagles made it an 18-16 game, but four straight points by Good Hope gave them a 22-16 lead. Vinemont scored four straight points to swivel the deficit to just two at 22-20. However, the Lady Raiders finished the set strong, scoring the final three points of the game, and they punched their ticket to yet another county championship game with a 25-20 win over top-seeded Vinemont.

Good Hope 2 – Holly Pond 1 (25-17, 14-25, 15-7) (JV)

Good Hope got out to a 5-1 lead in the first set against Holly Pond and would stretch their lead to 11-3. The Lady Broncos made a little run to cut it to 13-8, but the Lady Raiders quickly pushed their lead to 17-9. Good Hope’s lead hit double digits at 22-11 late in the set, but Holly Pond made one last run to get back in the game, as they made it a 24-17 game. The Lady Raiders collected the final point and ended up collecting a 25-17 win in the first set.

Holly Pond jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in the second set, and it quickly grew to 10-3. The Lady Broncos widened their lead to 18-6, and it was never in doubt after that, as Holly Pond tied the series at one with a 25-14 win over Good Hope, sending this game to a third and deciding set.

It was close early on in the third set. Good Hope held a slim 5-3 lead, but Holly Pond would tie things up at six. The Lady Raiders dominated the rest of the set, as a 9-1 run helped them seal the 15-7 win and a spot in the championship game.

West Point 2 – Vinemont 1 (13-25, 25-22, 15-11) (JV)

It was a game of runs in the first set between West Point and Vinemont. The Lady Eagles jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but the Lady Warriors responded with six straight points to take a 6-3 lead. Vinemont tied things up at six. After West Point tied it up at eight, the Lady Eagles went on a huge 10-1 run to take an 18-9 lead. They widened their lead to 20-10 before eventually taking the first set, 25-13.

The second set was close throughout. West Point held a 7-4 lead, but five straight points by Vinemont gave them a 9-7 lead. The Lady Eagles stretched their lead to 14-10, but the Lady Warriors ended up tying things up at 14. Vinemont went on a 5-1 run to take a 19-15 lead, and they held a 22-18 lead late in the set. West Point, though, scored the final seven points to win the second set, 25-22, and things would get decided in set three.

Vinemont jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead in the third set and held an 8-5 lead later on. The Lady Warriors, though, went on a 7-0 run to take a 12-8 lead. The Lady Eagles made it a 14-11 game, but West Point collected the final point of the set, as they defeated Vinemont, 15-11, to move on to the title game.

Good Hope and West Point will face off against each other for the JV and varsity county championships Thursday night at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively.
