GOOD HOPE, Ala. – The 1A Addison Bulldogs traveled to beautiful James W. Shabel Stadium to take on the 4A Good Hope Raider and to serve as their Homecoming opponent. This has turned into quite the nice little rivalry and the games are usually very close. That was not the case on this drizzly evening as Good Hope treated the visiting Bulldogs as puppies and placed them into the pound with a dominating 27-0 victory. Addison’s offense never showed up as they were stifled by the Raider defense.

On another note, Good Hope senior Cori Stevens was announced as the 2024 Good Hope Homecoming Queen. The lovely Ms. Stevens is the daughter of Blake and Lisa Stevens. It took the public address announcer 30 minutes just to list Ms. Stevens’ many accomplishments before she was announced as queen. I am sure great things await this young lady in the future.

The Bulldogs kicked off and Good Hope took possession of the ball at their own 29-yard line. The drive was all about Mason Drake and Tyler Cone.  After a first down and a couple of Drake runs, Good Hope was facing a 2nd and 13 from their own 40.  Cone then hit Drake with a little out pass for twelve yards to make it a much more manageable 3rd and 1. Drake then picked up the first down. Cone then found Carter Rutherford for 17-yards down to the Bulldog 27-yard line.  A few plays later, Isaac Bagwell found the endzone from 5 yards out.  Robert Rodriguez kicked the extra point and with 6:40 to go in the first quarter, Good Hope led 7-0.

After an exchange of possessions, Addison got the ball back at their own 29. Bulldog QB Kaden Dyson tried to throw a quick out route, but Mr. Rutherford was there for the interception and returned it to the Bulldog 5. Addison’s defense stiffened as Brye Dollar recovered a Raider fumble on the very next play.

Addison couldn’t move the ball against the stingy Raider defense and had to punt.  Good Hope took over at the Bulldog 25. After a quick first down and the Raiders at the Bulldog 12, Cone’s pass was tipped by a leaping Dyson and intercepted by a diving Bobby Williams. Williams showed good hands for a big defensive lineman.

Addison was again forced to punt and Bulldog punter Bradley Willette crushed the ball for a 68-yard punt, in which 45 yards of it was in the air and he got a great Bulldog roll pinning the Raiders at their own 2-yard line. This is the drive that took the wind out of the Bulldogs. Facing a 3rd and 3 from the 9-yard line, Good Hope’s Cone threw a deep pass down the home sideline towards Rutherford. Rutherford undercut the Bulldog DB, who had pretty decent coverage, and caught the ball at the Raider 39. Rutherford then made three Bulldogs miss tackles and sprinted the final 61 yards for the touchdown. Rodriguez nailed the extra point and with only 2:44 to go in the first half, Good Hope extended their lead to 14-0. This is how the first half ended.

Addison received the second half kickoff and the game was officially over on the third play. Addison gained no yards on 2 running plays and on 3rd and 10, Dyson dropped back to pass and had to run for his life. The Raider defenders should have paid rent because they were in the Addison backfield so much on this evening. Dyson got spun around by Mr. Bagwell and attempted to throw the ball away. In doing so he threw the ball 36 yards backwards towards the Bulldog endzone. That is where Senior Hank Hudson recovered the loose football in the endzone for the Raider touchdown. The two-point attempt was no good and with 10:33 to go in the third quarter, Good Hope had pushed their lead to 20-0.

After an Addison three and out, Good Hope took over at their own 29-yard line. On 2nd and 7 from the Raider 32, a simple off tackle run by Drake ended up 68 yards later in the endzone for the Raider touchdown. Rodriguez nailed the extra point and with 7:38 to go in the third, Good Hope led 27-0.

This was the final score of the game as Addison could get no closer than the Raider 35-yard line and Good Hope pulled their starters with about 6 minutes left in the game.  Good Hope came away with a dominant homecoming victory, 27-0.

Addison (3-3, 2-1 region) will travel to Waterloo for another region game Friday Night.  Addison’s schedule gets noticeably easier as none of their remaining opponents have a winning record which is in sharp contrast to the first 6 games where they have played four undefeated teams. Good Hope (5-0, 3-0 region) travels to take on Curry with an opportunity to keep its shutout streak intact.
