ADDISON, Ala. – The Addison Lady Bulldogs hosted a tri-match with county rival Lynn Lady Bears and brand new to 1A from AISA, the Huntsville Christian Academy Lady Saints. Addison swept both their matches and Lynn defeated the Lady Saints in two sets.

Addison 2 – Lynn 0 (25-13, 25-13)

The top-ranked Lady Bulldogs got off to their usual great regular start jumping on the Lady Bears 11-2 behind the hot serve of Mattie Johnson and the stellar defensive play of Lauren Cunningham and Katie Barrett. Barrett then served for 6 straight points to put the Lady Dawgs into a huge 17-2 lead and it looked like the rout was on. It appeared that the ladies from Addison got complacent and the Lady Bears went on an extended run taking nine out of ten points. With the score at 18-11, the Lady Dawgs regrouped and behind Johnson’s serve went on to take the first set, 25-13.

The second set was a little different as the Lady Bears jumped out 6-4 as they were outplaying the Lady Bulldogs. With the game standing at 11-8 Lynn, Addison’s Brystil Moser took the serve and went for ten straight points to give Addison the 18-11 lead.  Ava Bartlett controlled the net and Cunningham handled the digs. Addison was able to control the remainder of the game by playing excellent defense and coming up with timely hitting. Addison won the second set and match 25-13.

Addison 2 – Huntsville Christian Academy 0 (25-8, 25-8)

The Lady Bulldogs played a game against an obviously overmatched Lady Saint team and the results were predictable. You have the newest and possibly the smallest school in 1A in their first season of league volleyball against a historic small school power in the Addison Lady Bulldogs who if they don’t make the state title game the season is considered a failure. Addison jumped out 9-2 behind the serve of Barrett and the defense of Cunninham and Bartlett. The game Lady Saints scored two straight points to cut the lead to 9-4 and then Miss Annabeth Powell went on a roll with 7 straight serves to give Addison the lead at 16-4. The rest of the game went as expected with Bartlett and Johnson controlling the net with several kills and the entire team completing the victory at 25-8.

The second set was competitive as the Lady Saints actually hung tough as the game was tied at 6. Then Miss Barrett went on an incredible service run, serving for 15 straight points. Cunningham, Moster and Johnson were excellent on defense as Addison had a huge 21-6 lead. The set finished with Addison taking the 25-8 victory.

Addison senior Katie Barrett,

“I thought we played well, I mean in a slow atmosphere. We controlled the pace of both games and we were able to control our side of the net.”
