CULLMAN, Ala. – The Alabama Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association hosted a roundtable discussion recently to help identify potential volunteers and community partners for care and support services and The Longest Day, the Association’s signature fundraising initiative.

During the event, held in August at the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce, individuals came together to help identify areas in need of support through volunteers. The Longest Day aims to unite the community and its families, friends, clubs, organizations, religious groups and businesses with an organized display of strength and dedication in the fight against the devastating diagnosis, prognosis and symptoms of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

“Volunteers are at the heart of the Alzheimer’s Association, and the roles we will discuss during the roundtable will give our organization the ability to provide a more robust support system for those living with dementia and their caregivers,” said Cecile Brown, The Longest Day manager for the Alabama Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Volunteers are needed throughout the organization in a number of capacities on an individual level and larger scale, appropriate for businesses, nonprofits and organizations that wish to host and sponsor events, outings and organized gatherings.

Community Educator Volunteers should have exemplary communication, presentation and adult education skills with the ability to network and collaborate with staff, volunteers and community partners. Volunteers should feel passionate about the Alzheimer’s Association’s mission, with personal or professional experience with dementia preferred. The role of the Community Education Volunteer will primarily be to help the Alzheimer’s Association raise awareness, provide education to the community and expand the reach of support. Volunteers may be asked to deliver presentations using prepared training materials on topics related to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

The Longest Day Community Outreach Volunteers must possess proven networking and communication skills and consider themselves well connected in their community or industry to assist in identifying and recruiting leaders, volunteers, organizations, clubs, companies, businesses and activity groups that can lend a hand in fundraising efforts for The Longest Day. Community Outreach Volunteers will take steps in building and refining the new participant prospect list and help implement ways to build community awareness about The Longest Day and its mission. Volunteers will also be tasked with the recruitment of businesses in the community and participants from activity groups, clubs and organizations.
